Complaint: Complaint:  My original cc was with Providian Financial who has been purchased by Washington Mutual.  Stay far, far away from this company!!!  Recently, our family went on vacation.  My husband is in the military and had just returned from Iraq.  Washington Mutual turned a dream reunion into a nightmare.  My minimum payment due on my Visa card was $109, however, I sent in $1000 so that we would have money on the credit card for our vacation.  Two days after I sent in the $1000, I checked my balance to make sure the funds had posted and had an available balance of $934.  Our family, which includes two toddlers, set out on vacation.  Five days into our vacation, I am told by a retailer that my cc was being denied.  Embarrassed and mad I used my cell phone to call right in the store.  What I found out should persuade everyone and anyone from EVER doing business with Washington Mutual.  According to Washington Mutual it is part of their agreement that they can lower o!
r raise your credit limit anytime they wish.  I have been late on paying my cc several times, but it has always been paid within 30 days of the due date.  According to WM since I hadn't always paid my bill on or before the due date they considered me a bad credit risk and lowered my balance.  The letter was "in the mail" advising me my limit had been lowered.  Wow, what a way to do business...I send WM payments every month and have sent in large payoffs on many occasions...on this occasion I sent them $891 more than my minimum payment and I AM A CREDIT RISK!  Give me a break!!!!  I think WM over extended themselves when purchasing Providian Financial and they are lowering limits to protect themselves from financial fallout.  I don't see how this is fair, but I also don't know how to fight it, except to warn others!!!!!  By the way, we were stranded on our vacation.  We live out West and were on the East Coast visiting family and friends.  As a result of WM stealing almost $9!
00 from us, we had to have family Western Union funds to us on vacation just so we could get home.  I can't believe how callus WM was to our situation.  If an attorney reads this, I would LOVE to be your first client in a Class Action Suit against Washington Mutual.  Please heed my warning and stay away from Washington Mutual!!!!

Complaint:
I am SOOO mad! In the mail to day I had my statement from my Washington mutual credit card. A little back ground first. OK I have over 10 credit cards and mortgage and a revolving load. I got my Washington card last year and I had 8 credit cards and everything else at that time. I had a Limit of 2000 with an APR of 18.99. Not to bad.  Anyway that card got a up to about 1700 NEVER a late payment or a over-limit. NEVER NEVER NEVER. I had really bad credit at the start of 2000 but in the last six years NO late payments on anything but a missed cable bill. So Some of you know that I won 8000 dollars this summer. I thought Lets pay off my credit cards!. So Payed off all but two of my cards(Some one else is using those two.) I paid off the 1700 of the Washington mutual. The the next month (Oct) I got a bill for 7.96 apparently i did not pay it off in time to not get the finance charge. So I sent that in. Today I got my statement Its 0.00 like it should be but when I look at my Cr!
edit limit it says 250. THEY lowered my credit limit 1750 with out even telling me!!!. Hell, if I had not even paid it off I would have had 300 left on my limit to play with.  If I had tried to make a purchase of over 250 it would have mostly gone threw  and the I would have been over my limit and had fees add.  I think I should have at lest got a warning BEFORE they  lowered it. Why did they lower it? Because I always paid my bills on time and paid it off? I called them to find out why and the said that I would be getting a letter in the mail telling my why and that they could not tell my over the phone because the did not know why BULLSHIT. So I just cancel the fucking card. I wish I knew it was getting lowered before they did it I would have canceled it then. I in a few weeks I am going to order my credit reports and score to find out what this has done to them.  I just so angry that they did this with out telling me first. I think that in its self is fraud.

Complaint_against: washington mutual- visa credit card

Complaint: STAY CLEAR OF WASHINGTON MUTUAL for any financial service-especially the their visa credit card It is a bait and switch and will draw you in to an interest charge you can't get rid of. I was sent advertisements on a 0% balance transfer until April of 08. After many phone calls that took me no where-except to continuing misrepresentations,I find out that it is not a 0% on the transfer but on future purchases. I found out what they were doing because finance charges showed up on by on-line history within three days of the transfer. The discussions I had in this regard were absurd. I had no scheduled payment until 11/30-- I paid the entire balance on the account on 7th. 2 days later interest charges showed up again. Went thru the same futile phone conversations with somebody that could barely speak English. Paid the account off in full again on the 15th. No activity on the card since-- interest charges are showing up again. To describe the level of insanity of the dis!
cussions I have had with these people in this regard is not possible. For the sake of time I won't continue this alert any longer- but for your sake and that of your family and any one else you know-- GET A CREDIT CARD AND DO YOUR BANKING SOMEWHERE ELSE. These people are preditors.

Complaint:
My first experience with Providian and Washington Mutual was when I was sent an offer for 0% APR transfers on other credit cards. I elected to transfer the balances of two cards to them .. ( total of both were well under the available credit amount stated on the solicitation for transfers.)
They transferred only part of the balance on one. And none of the other.
With no notification... And although they charged no APR for the period they stated. They did charge a "transfer" fee each month that was for all practical purposes the same as the interest payment would have been.
Later I received a email notice that I had an on-line payment returned for insf. funds..And they were charging me a return payment and late fee.
Problem was... I never sent them that payment ! It was for an amount in the thousands of dollars. And drawn on an account I had never heard of.
After several email correspondences and phone calls. I was finally told by an account supervisor that the charges were considered legitimate and that I had obviously let someone get my account information and they send the payment.!!!! ????.
Why would anyone doing ID theft make a payment to my account ?   Long story short.... I have payed off my balance, closed the account and told them to never contact me for any reason again.  I would warn anyone from doing business with them in the future. And if you currently do... get out ASAP. They will "Stick you " sooner or later.  They are incompetent, arrogant, and I think use less than ethical business practices. They are definitely BAD NEWS..

Complaint_against: WASHINGTON MUTUAL CREDIT CARD

If you have a WASHINGTON MUTUAL CREDIT CARD be very careful!  I never thought this would happen to me.  I was spending late December in San Francisco with my family. Had cash in one pocket and my beloved WAMU card in the other. We were set to enjoy the Holliday and my girls and wife were thrilled.  At a family dinner reunion, that I was planning to pay, the waitress pulled me aside telling me the card was declined. I had paid off the balance completely in November as I do not like to keep a balance on my cards. My face was red from embarrassment. My family and friends thought I was ill. I ran to the cash machine because I honestly thought someone was perhaps using my cards.  I called Washington Mutual the next day where a well mannered customer service agent named Elmo informed me that my credit had been reduced almost $4000! He also informed me that a letter should be arriving explaining this matter further. I was stunned. How very corporate and sanitized a blow it was.  When the letter came, they wrote that Wampum's "mission" is to make sure their customer are "responsible and reliable" in using there credit. (I asked if they thought pulling someone's credit line without notice, much less a decent explanation, to be "responsible".) They claimed that they periodically review customer credits and felt they were "protecting" me. So I pulled my credit and noticed all my cards were at zero except for a $3000 Credit Union card I use for business...my score wasn't that bad 650...they approved the card early this year with that same score.  I proceeded to close the account. Also, cancelled my home refinance with them. I don't know if they care... they're so big. But they pretend to be so darn approachable. It's a Wolf in Sheep's clothing.  So this is what I recommend anyone to do. Put some money in your local credit union (tons out there now) Open a CD account. Lock it for a year and they'll lend you a Visa Credit line against it. It's easy and in the meantime you'll still earn interest on the CD.

Complaint:
Because of the legislative favoritism the banking/credit industry has received for the last 6 years, the only way to have a chance of fair credit practices is through a LOCAL bank where they have to be accountable face-to-face. National credit-granting institutions basically have carte blanche to treat you any way they please. They have policies and terms that allow them to justify limitless fees and interest rates for limitless reasons.
I implore anyone that has been treated poorly by PayPal, GE Money Bank, WaMu/Providian, Capital One, etc.. to write a letter- even if it's not intricate - that notes your complaint and make four copies. Send one each to:
1 Office of the Comptroller
2 Your State Attorney General
3 Your area's Better Business Bureau
4 Your Congressional Representative
Our only power is in legislative pressure and class-action suits. Again, I implore you to write if you've been wronged. I'll even help you if I can in any way! We have an obligation TO ONE ANOTHER to speak up!
questions? randy@nopeitssoap.com
HERE IS THE LETTER I SENT TO THE 4 ENTITIES:
This credit card company must be reigned in. I've tried to simply have them remove one late payment report from my credit record. When I informed Capital One of the same identity theft issue, they retracted the derogatory reporting right away. Washington Mutual, on the other hand, has made it very difficult to even make the request, and ultimately refused to remove the bad marks. The late payments (on 2 different accounts) were the direct result of identity theft. I reported it to them at the time and I have documented such. They are my only late payments on ANYTHING in the last 2 years.
I have included copies of every written correspondence I reference herein.
With regard to this particular incident, my complaints are as follows:
The first time I called card services, I explained I wanted to record the phone call (as they record their own phone calls). The representative refused and terminated the call. Why can they record me but I can't record them?
When I called card services, I was told there wasn't anybody I could talk to about my situation. They said all I could do was fax the information to a particular phone number. I did so and had to re-contact them 4 times over 10 days before someone called to acknowledge they received the 2nd, short letter in which I beg them to acknowledge my initial 10-page fax. She said she didn't know what had become of the first, 10-page fax. What an incredible waste of my time.
On this same phone call, the woman said that, if I already had a balance when the card was stolen, I should have paid the bill regardless. I explained that ALL of my resources had been drained via my debit card and all credit cards. I explained that there were over limit fees, late fees, etc, that I hadn't created and for which I was not responsible. Again, I wanted to document WaMu's response to my inquiry, but she refused to be recorded. I asked her why they can record me, but I can't record them. She said that they indicate I "may" be recorded. I told her that I was therefore informing her that she merely "may" be recorded. I said she would have to end the call if she did not consent to such. When she heard the recorder initiate, she hung up on me.
Some of Washington Mutual's other offenses are:
They increased my interest rate to 31.49% as a result of the identity theft effects.
They did not inform me in writing of the astronomical interest rate increases.
I was not aware that they were reporting any late payments to the credit bureaus.
There has to be some person, organization, or government entity that has the desire or ability to these credit card corporations in check. I've paid off both of these credit card accounts in full. They've made a relative fortune from me in OUTRAGEOUS interest and fees over many years. I'm merely asking for an accurate representation on my credit reports. Is that really too much to ask?

Complaint_against: Providian/Washington Mutual

Complaint: My complaint is similar to many stated above, but I do feel the need to vent here. I was reviewing my credit card account online for my Providian Visa (which became Washington Mutual Visa this year- without notice or my consent) when I noticed a huge jump in my APR from 15.74 to 23.74%. I have used this card for 4 years and have made on-time payments for EVERY bill in that time (as well as on-time payments for all accounts I have). I have very good credit and always pay more than the minimum payment. So I called the "customer service" number provided and was connected to a call center that was definitely located outside of the US. I explained the situation and asked why my APR had jumped. The man told me they "regularly review the accounts of all customers and it was determined that they should raise my APR." My online account for this card has a FICO report every month...and my credit score had actually increased during the time he said my account was being revie!
wed! Seems to me that should have lowered my APR! I pointed this out to him and all he could reply was again the scripted message about accounts being regularly reviewed and that at this time I was not eligible for any special offers. So in light of my excellent record with the company and my excellent credit score I requested the APR be restored to the 15.74 (which I feel to be quite high anyway). He said the company could not lower APRs. So I asked how it is possible for them to raise APRs, seeing as they obviously do not have access to the credit cards they issue and service. Again the scripted reply. I asked to speak to his supervisor. I was connected to a woman at the same location who was even less helpful than the man I spoke to. Politely I explained everything to her as I had to the previous "customer service representative." Again, the exact same answers. Only this time she claimed to not have a supervisor to whom I could speack, and when asked if I could at least s!
peak to someome with access to adjusting APRs she claimed there was in fact no such person in the company! Are you kidding me???? She then went on to explain that in my September paper bill there was a small notice that the APR would be raised, along with an option to "OPT OUT" of the increase by writing to them in a certain manner and declining the APR increase. I told her that I pay my bills online and do not even use the paper correspondance and had long ago chosen to receive my correspondence via email. This apparently makes no difference. So I also explained how this seems to be beyond a deceitful business practice! It's like sending a customer a note saying "We are seriously going to screw you over. Big time. However, you may opt out of being screwed over by writing to us and informing us that you do not accept being screwed. You must notify us in a blue ball time pen purchased from such-and-such store and write the notice in perfectly formed cursive letters on white p!
aper at a brightness level of 96 and attach your birth records, medical charts, top ten things you want to do in your life and your mother's maiden name. And, oh yeah, it needed to be received my yesterday." Ok, so the terms were not quite this rigid, but nonetheless they were certainly deceitful.  So, I informed the woman I was choosing to "OPT OUT" right now. She said I had missed the opting out deadline and there was absolutely no way she nor anyone else could change my APR. I told her I would be transfering my balance and pursuing this matter further through the legal system if necessary, and that I sincerely hope that she as a fellow human being- not a WAMU robot- understood what a corrupt and unethical company she was working for. Once my balance has been transferred I will be closing my account with this awful company and continuing my quest to make it known how corrupt and dangerous giant credit card companies are. It is cash only from here on out! On a positive note!
- I called my local credit union I have had a card with for the past 9 years and explained the situation- the representative told me she was going to upgrade my card to lower my APR to 9% and also approve a credit limit increase so I could transfer my WaMu balance. And I can speak to her face to face if I need to (...no doubt she would even be smiling while providing actual customer service). It is definitely time for our legislators to start representing the interests of the citizens- NOT those of big business and special interest groups!

Do not get a Washington Mutual card.!  During the holidays I was about 4 days late on my payment they called every day for 3 days and 4 times on Christmas Eve !!!!  Now a few months later I tried to pay for a big purchase with the card and it would not go through. I called them and  after talking to someone in India that I had to have repeat himself at least 3 times because I could not understand his English. He told me they had reduced my available credit by $700.00.  He told me I should have received a notice in the mail.  He then said it was sent yesterday sir. I am happy I was not on vacation like other's have mentioned when Wa Mu did this to them.  When Providian was the card company I did not have one problem and I did not have to call overseas to talk to someone almost able to speak English.

I opened my account early in March, 2006.  I soon separated from my wife and I communicated my change of address to WAMU.  They continued to send bills to my old address.  My ex-wife wrote "return" instead of "forward" on them.  When WAMU received the "returned" bills they marked my account as a bad address instead of comparing the communicated address with the address of the return.  In the chaos of starting my life over, I didn't notice that I wasn't receiving statements.  They finally tracked me down three months later.  I brought my balance up to date immediately.  They still reported me to the credit bureaus.  I went round and round for a long time with them, but they have refused to correct the problem or even acknowledge their error.  My only recourse is to have a statement appended to my account by the credit bureau.

I took out a Platinum Visa card from Providian.  It is my only card.  Washington Mutual has since taken over Providian.  I have paid my balance in full every statement period except for one time when I was a week late.  They have dropped my Credit Limit twice, once for the late payment and the second time for no reason at all.  The call center person could tell me no reason for the limit cut by half this month.
They are dangerous because they don't notify you before they take the action.  In addition, the first time they cut my limit, they dropped it below the pre-existing open balance AND tried to charge me an over-limit fee!  I had that removed, but, the kid on the phone with an obvious New Delhi accent, named "Robert", had no understanding of why I thought it would be wrong to charge a fee for a situation that resulted from WM actions.
I believe they are over extended with the Providian take over.  Do them a favor, stay away!  I'm doing my part and dropping Washington Mutual's Visa card.  With 5 offers in the mail every day, why put up with Washington Mutual's problems.

Washington Mutual had the audacity to deactivate my card when I was four days late with an $18 payment.  This despite the fact that I have  had their card since they purchased Providian and my payment history is good.
This cutoff is done by machine, so there is no one who takes accountability.  This is a small example of what's wrong with our country.

So I found out my transunion FICO score is 799. I found this out from Washington Mutuals online service. I paid this credit card off around the first of the year. I have had no intentions to use the card again after I paid off a balance I accrued from home rennovation costs.
Well, apparantly Netflix charged one more billing cycle of 30 dollars to this card after I changed the billing for to a different credit card that accrues points. I haven't received any statements from WaMu for this 30 dollars until today. In a Past Due notice. I also noticed they cut my credit limit from 16,500 to 250. over 30.00. I figured I didn't get any statements because the account was paid off. And, when I called and asked, they said they dinged my credit report, which, until now, had NO DEROGATORY ITEMS.
I talked to three customer service reps and even though we've had an impeccable payment history and I have a HUGE credit score they don't care. They said I can fax a letter to them regarding credit bureau complaints with a recent copy of my credit report.
All this, over 30.00.   Towards a customer that regularly paid off monthly balances in the thousands of dollars.   NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Complaint: Providian was bought out by Washington mutual and all of the sudden these mysterious new fees started accruing on my credit card balance.  The finance charges skyrocketed....  with providian, the APR was about 7% and today when I called Wamu, they told me my APR is now a whopping 26.24%!  How can this be?? my FICO score is over 750 & I always pay above the minimum.  My bf has the same card and he noticed it was harder to pay off his debt too.  These guys are complete crooks.  They're basically pulling what FLEET bank did a few years ago.. gobbling up smaller banks and arbitrarily tacking on fees w/o notifying account holders. What a great business model for THEFT.

WASHINGTON MUTUAL WRITES BAD CHECKS AND HAS AN "ALL HASSLE" REWARDS VISA!  I had a Providian Rebate Card, which accumulates 1% of purchases and provides an annual rebate check.
Everything went well, until Washington Mutual took over this account in 2006, but failed to give me a rebate check all of last year (check was due in November).  After 3 phone calls and one letter, WaMu sent me my $341 rebate check... which bounced!  WaMu's rep said they'd send another check, but wouldn't reimburse me for the fees that my bank charges for handling their bad check.
I'm currently pursuing this matter through California's strict bad-check-writing laws and have canceled the card.  I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else who's had a similar experience, and I'm interested in speaking with a lawyer regarding a possible class-action lawsuit.  Feel free to contact me at ERIKOFCA@YAHOO.COM.

Complaint: I have had two credits cards with Providian for a number of years until it was sold out to Wamu.  I went over my latest statement on my credit card was was sick to my stomach at they are charging.  My rate is 31.99%.  I spoke to a supervisor with the credit services and he stated that there was a notice sent out last year about change in terms.  Their notices are garage who can understand these notices.  What is the difference between a loan shark and Wamu??  To me they are the same and they could care less what you think or do.  They where not willing to do anything on the rate even though I have never been late and pay over the minumum.  They are BY FAR the worst credit company I have every dealt with at least with Capital One they are reasonable in their rates and my rates have not gone up in several years.  All credit card companies are out to make a buck but Washington Mutual is not only out to make a buck but out to rip people off the best way they know how.!
MY ADVICE DO NOT GO WITH WAMU FOR ANY CREDIT CARD SERVICES THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF SEE THE OTHER COMMENTS!!!

They have demanded money, they have run my card waayy over the limit with their fees every month.  I never bought anything on either of my 2 cards since I lost the job. Still, I have sent them some money every month and not complained about the fees piling up.  I did try to block their phone calls, but every time I put a number on call block, they would just call from another number.  A couple of weeks ago, I received a letter which stated that if I didn't pay $106.00 by July 9th, they would close the account (the one I haven't used anyway in over a year) forever and turn it over to a collection agency.  I didn't get paid til today and wrote checks for all my bills.  The phone rang (a!
800 number) and I answered.  Guess who!  I was so proud that I had managed to free up the $106.00 that they wanted, and I said, "I just wrote you a check".  They asked, "And how much is that check?"  I told them, and they replied, "As a matter of fact, you're going to have to write it for $410.00.  I freaked!  I told them, " I wrote the check for what your letter said to write it for, and that's all you're getting.  Do not call my house again.  Bye."
I can't believe that this company does business this way.  No other company has given me a problem and I have them paid down below the limits now.  I can't see how the government allows this.

Complaint:
I have been a card holder with Providan now Washington Mutual for 9 plus years. I have NEVER been late on a payment with this card company nor ANY of my other creditors. My APR was increased to a default APR of 31.99%. I paid the account in full $7000 over a course of a week. I got a statement after paying the account off and my APR was again increased to 32.38%. I was OUTRAGED and called to request a lower APR since I have always honored my account agreeement and paid the account in full. I was denied a APR decrease. When i mentioned that my credit report indicated that I had NEVER been late with any of my accounts and the only negative thing on my credit report were some medical bills from a lengthly, near terminal illness from four years ago, which are being paid I was still denied a decrease.
I questioned the reason for the continued increase in my APR and was told that it "has nothing to do with your account with us, but we reviewed your accounts with other creditors and the decision was based on that." I repeated that I have nothing on my creditor report that warranted WAMUs decision to treat me like an irresponsible consumer. I was then read a script about how they have the right for reasons "they deem necessary" to increase my APR and if I don't agree with the terms I can "close your account." Closing a nearly 10yr old account with zero delinquencies would hurt my credit rating.. I am absoutley appalled that being a good customer does not matter to WAMU Cards.

Complaint: Seems I'm not along.  Had a Providian card for a number of years with no problems at all.  They were taken over by Wamu so my card was now through them.  I made two late payments, one phone transfer (12:15am so 15 min late) and another two days late.  Got my statement the other day, APR went up to 25%.  I called customer service and talked to Tammy and Frank, who oddly enough speak a lick of english.  They said the were in the Philapines (sp?).  Anyway, they were of no help and told me the could not lower my APR due to the late payments.  I talked to a supervisor who said he could open a new account (since I closed my account after seeing the APR) and I could request an new APR in a couple weeks., Yeah right !!!!!!  He said it was their right as stated in the contract to raise the APR of late payments.  WTF.  In my opinion there is a difference between a payment being two days late and two months.  My prior five year history means nothing to them.  STAY AWAY.  THE!
Y WILL SUCK YOU IN AND YOU WILL BE SCREWED..  Thank god I can pay off this card and get rid of them...

I use WaMu for my personal banking, and when I received a letter asking me if I would like to have a WaMu Visa, I jumped at the chance. I had always received outstanding customer service from them, and figured it would be the same with the cc.
Wrong!
I am ignornant for having signed up for the e-billing, because it makes it so easy to jump online, pay your bill, and be done with it. Now I am learning my lesson, which is to no matter what, scruntinize your statements down to the penny, even if you don't think you have the time. I have apparently, been being charged for a credit protection service I did not ask for, and when I asked to speak to a supervisor, he said, "you have had it on there for over a year, you should have checked your statements." You are right, I should have, but considering I did not authorize it, how can you in good conscience, charge me for it? I demanded a partial reimbursement, and at first, he tried to just reimburse me the amount for the current month. I raised my voice a little, while still remaining polite, and he was able to refund three months. I'm still a little peeved about this, and if anyone knows where I can send a complaint to, I would be very happy. Especially since the rep I origina!
lly spoke to admitted point blank, in order for me to have had this service, I would have had to talked to someone first, and they would have read me a script. Um hello, I never did! I hate these companies. They have us by the you-know-what, and they know it!

To Whom It May Concern:
I am discouraged to find that you again have increased my interest rate on my credit card to a whopping 38 percent.  Looking over my records I have NOT used this card since 6/2005 and in that time frame have paid an excess of 4300.00 dollars to your organization in interest and those other fees you seem to keep tacking on to my statements.  My card maximum balance is only 3500 dollars.
Please reevaluate this situation and try to come up with something which is more manageable for me as I have NOT been neglecting payments due.   I have written before and all I am told is that is the way it is.  I need more specifics as to why your organization can be so very insensitive to those who are simply trying to make a living.  I will not even include the negative comments you continually present on my credit report which makes it sound like I am not doing what I should be doing.   To me paying over 4300 dollars in fees the past two years while not using your card, at the very least , should say I am putting great effort in trying to keep myself afloat.   Respectfully, Joe M.

Complaint: I called Washington mutual to find out exactly what I owed to pay it off. The woman told me the credit balance from Feburary..it was August when I called. I paid the card off with the amount they told me. I call for a credit I have coming and the guy says I should have paid $47 more then I did but since they credited the account it took care of the $47. They also ask for a minium payment that does not even cover the finance charges they then add. Every time you call someone gives you information from whatever month they happen to be looking at and not the one you call on. Then act like it is not there fault they were wrong. And I have top wait a month to reques the credit because they have yet to bill the finance charges for the 5 days from ther new billing cycle to the pay off date. There customer service is horrendous and I plan on closing this account ASAP.

Complaint_against: Providian Credit Card/WaMu Bank

Complaint: I have been the victim of 'legal extortion' through both my personal bank (Washington Mutual, Sparta, NJ) and an old credit card debt that I was unable to pay off. I don't know where to turn so I decided to post a complaint to alert others to be VERY wary of these unscrupulous practices. I had a debt of less than $1000 from 1999-2000, when I had gone through a divorce and bankruptcy. I lost my job in 2001 as a direct result of the terrorist attacks in NYC, and was a single mother of 3 children under 18. I had no income, and I was unable to pay off the debt in a timely manner and thus charged with late fees, high interest, and finally, lawyers fees from collection agencies. I was notified via several letters and harassing, nasty phone calls by 'associates' and 'representatives' of Providian and the subsequent companies which took over when this company shifted through different ownerships, and although I tried to reason with these people - they wanted  almost 3 tim!
es the amount of the original debt, they wanted ALL of it and would NOT settle for partial payments. I had tried writing letters to them to no avail. They hounded me day and night, and I simply decided not to answer the phone any more. This went on for years. It is now 2007 and I STILL have no viable income, but I did remarry a wonderful man. He works very hard for his money and we opened a joint checking and savings account. Yesterday, both accounts were 'wiped out' by Providian/ and the Law Offices of Nudelman, Nudelman and Zering in Roseland, NJ. They took over $4,000 for a slightly under $1,000 debt! It's been 7 years of this nonsense all because I chose to get a Providian Credit card, and I haven't been able to get my life back on track nor able to pay down the debt which mounted higher and higher as the time went on. It's a nightmare, one which I cannot seem to wake from. This 'cleaning out' of our bank accounts is the LAST straw - we aren't able to pay our mortgage or!
other bills. We cannot recoup from this and I have to ask HOW on earth is a credit card company able to simply gain access to a bank account and TAKE all of it? This seems highly underhanded and illegal. Any advice regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated. I fear my husband may leave me, and I shall be left homeless. I am still unemployed, under extreme financial distress and now have health issues that prevent me from finding anything even remotely gainful. Thank you for listening.

Complaint: When I received my new card, I noticed it got changed over to Washington Mutual.  Then, when I called to check up on the balance of my card, I got transferred over to a Fraud Prevention company.  They had some questions for me.  I didn't think it was a big deal.  Some of the questions were the obvious, and I answered them better than they can ask me.  Some of their questions, I was trying to figure out where they were getting them from.  Because I couldn't answer those questions, I couldn't get verified and my account got blocked.  I'm thinking, how in the world can I be a fraud to myself?  I asked them where they were getting these questions from cause I need to know myself.  They replied that they cannot provide that information.  What?  Now nearing billing date, I can't even make a payment online, since it states that my account is blocked!  I know I can mail in check, but why should I change the way I've been making payments for the past 4 years!  After so man!
y years with very little to no issues with providian, I get all these problems at once, and it's not even the first month!  Now I've been stuck on the phone for 30 minutes to contact service... sad.

Complaint: I authorized Washington Mutual to take $267 from my checking account on 10/05 they did that and then they took an authorized payment of $267 in November.  I contacted them immediately and received nothing but the run around and 1,000 excused why they would not reverse the payment - I have continued to contact them and they continue to refuse my unauthorized payment which caused my rent check to bounce and incur additional fees.  can anyone tell me what I can do?  I refuse to let this go.

Complaint: I have had a Washington Mutual credit card since they were Providian, over 6 years.  I have never been late with my payments to them.  I have never gone over my credit limit.  I have always paid them more than the minimum.  Last month they increased my APR to 31.55 and when I called them about it, they said they couldn't tell me why or help my in the least.

WaMu of washington mutual plays lots of games with credit limit to the utmost benefit of them. Having been a customer of providian and WaMU for years I paid my CC debt of 5g (credit limit 9k) and as soon as the balance was 0, they dropped my limit to 250$. They did not send a letter (as stated on the phone) nor a message on their website, though I did get payment notification messages. Doing a little homework I see that this has happened to a lot of users. Have a zero balance and all of a sudden your credit limit is slashed. I smell class action and encourage other to post if this has happened to you. The reason they said was a change in credit score, but mine has improved and their is not a single negative item. Cancel the card and be done with these fools.
Shame on you WaMU and FU WaMA

Complaint:
NEVER GET A CREDIT CARD FOR WASHINGTON MUTUAL. Shortly after my husband died back in November 2007, I mistakenly was making a payment online for my credit card balance and put in the wrong bank account number to withdraw the payment from.  I put in an account that does not allow this process.  So, the payment was returned to Washington Mutual.  I heard nothing from Washington Mutual but the next day when I was making a purchase, I was embarrased by having my car denied - they had put a lock on my account because of the returned payment even though I still had $4000 available dollars on my account.  I went online to check out my account and realized what had happened and IMMEDIATELY made a payment to cover my entire balance.  Fortunately, I had caught it in time, before the due date of the payment, so no late charge had been added.
At the end of February, I again made my monthly payment (covering the balance in full).  About 4 weeks later, I received a letter by snail mail telling me my last payment was returned so I needed to call their office for a password to unlock my account so I could make a payment online to cover the returned payment (this time I had made the payment in a hurry one day and clicked on the wrong method of payment).  So I called in, got the password, and made the payment - not only for the amount in full from back in February, but for the balance in full on that date!  Because they sent me a snail mail letter instead of emailing me, this time a late charge was attached of $39.
Last night I was once again embarrased when making a purchase and my card were refused.  I called in to hear on the recording that my account had been closed - no email, no phone call, NOTHING from them.  I called today and was told by 3 different customer NO-service reps, that absolutely nothing can be done to reverse this even though I have always paid off my account promptly each month.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!
