Complaint:
I too have had the pleasure of dealing with several Merrick Bank employees
over the past two weeks. My account is paid in full. I made one payment
and then made a second payment a week later. When I called to ascertain my
balance, I was stymied to hear that I had zero available funds. When I
spoke to a representative, I was advised that it takes 10 business days
before I can utilize my card for another purchase. I indicated that I made
my payments with a United States Postal Money Order which is considered
ready cash and sent them via Certified Mail return receipt requested. While
I have a checking account, I know that some creditors don't trust personal
checks. I was then advised that Merrick had encountered problems with both
personal checks and with US Postal Money Orders. I was told that the best
way to make payments and to ensure that I would always have access to my
card was to send my payments via Western Union or a Money Gram which I'm
told would cost me $8.!
00.
This is the only credit card that I know of that treats its customers in
this fashion. I do not intend to maintain the card. |

Complaint: I thought I sent Merrick Bank the amount I needed to send to
close my account. I recently received a statement showing I had a balance
of $3.00 therefore I sent a check for $3.00. Merrick Bank debited $300.00
from my checking account. Make sure to check your bank statement when
writing checks to them. That is a pretty big difference. |

Complaint: I received an offer from Merrick Bank for a Credit Card. I
accepted the offer which was 18% interest and no fees. I did not use the
card for one month, I did not receive anything from in the mail during that
time. The next month I did use the card at which time I got a notice in the
mail that said the wrong offer was given to me and the interest rate was
increased to almost 30%!!!!!! I will pay off my balance and close this
account. What Thievery! |

My due date was July 5th.
I called my bank and they told me that my cheque was cleared on June 28th.
But still, eventhough the cheque was cleared, 10 business days (not
including saturdays) are necessary to make sure the funds have been
transferred.
Just calculate, june28th + 10days = July10
=====»»»»» Eventhough my cheque was sent on time, I am way behind my due
date and have no available funds.
Merrick Bank is not a reliable system. I won't stick with them any longer. |

Complaint:
Merrick tried the same trick--late posting of payment--on me. I faxed them
several times and finally got extra charges removed. There was a period of
22 days between the day it cleared my bank and the date they said they
received it--ridiculous.
Now this last month I have not received a statement, and I suppose as they
had hoped, didn't notice it until a couple of weeks after. So now I will
have to fight with them about that. |

Complaint:
I had an account with Merrickbank/visacard for the past couple years. I had
runnup my limit to the max a couple times where I choose to make payments
instead of paying it off every month, and once a yr paying it off entirely.
In May of this year I moved, and I notified Merrickbank of the change in
address. In june i recieved a notice from Merrickbank that I needed to
provide a physical address as well as mailing address which I complied with.
In July I paid off my exisiting accounts with multiple agencies as I
recieved the billings.
In September I recieved notice from Merrickbank stating I had been late in
pymnts for a period exceeding 75 days, And that there were fee's attached
for that reason. When I asked how that could be, they explained that my
billings had been sent to the physical address I had provided upon their
request, and that they had been returned undelivered. When I explained to
them that I had recently paidoff all my accounts and that I had assumed they
were included in that effort, They told me it was doubtfull that I could
have mistaken it being paidoff, However when I explained they hadnt sent me
a bill at the correct address due to their own request for my physical
address, They said it was still my fault as I should have known I owed that
money to them. I repeted that I felt it wasnt my fault they changed my
billing address, So I didnt feel it was proper for them to bill me extra
charges and late fee's when I had always made proper payments on time before
now and the fact that the !
address change was their fault, They became argumentive and flippant and
basically told me I owed the money and thats the way it goes.
I argued with 2 supervisiors and requested a formal complaint be filed, I
also offered to pay the bill in full without the extracharges as I didnt
feel it was my fault. They refused to allow me that oppertunity nor would
they provide me with proper managemnet contact to register a formal
complaint. I elected to close the account and requested they dismiss the
late fee's and extra penalties and then I would pay the bill in full. To
witt they havenot attempted to resolve the matter.
They have already filed a negitive report in this matter, and now are
pushing me for full payment of the latefee's etc. So I am in no hurry to
resolve this matter since it seems their fault that I hadnt recieved a bill
for over 2 months. They argue that it's my fault that I hadnt contacted them
to complain that i hadnt recieved a billing, And I argue that it isnt my
fault as I was certain I had paid all my billings as I had them all infront
of me and only then realized that there was no billings from Merrickbank
since June. |

Complaint: Lets see where do I start. I am 19 and trying to build my credit
so when I received the offer in the mail I thought it would be a good way to
start building credit for me. I opened the card and began using it in
moderation. The 300 dollar credit limit was enough to buy me groceries when
needed and what not. Well in august my card along with all my other personal
information was stolen I immediately called and canceled the card and was
told that I would be sent one within a week well a week came and went I had
no information from the bank and I was going through all the other stolen
crap when the first letter I received from Merrick was a collector bill.
They began to call every hour on the hour to my house when I wasn't there.
It got out of hand to the point where they were calling sunday at 8 in the
morning all day long so I picked up the phone finally only to talk with a
very rude lady who demanded I pay right away. I asked to speak to a
supervisor and was refus!
ed I hung up angry and they began to call again and again, I answered and
finally set up a payment for 200.00 for that weekend. When I found out that
I didn't owe that much but only 95.00 as a payment I called and asked to
cancel the 200.00 debit and Gay the lady I talked to said that would be just
fine and that her supervisor had canceled it. I set up one for 95.00 and was
hoping things would go much smoother. Well come that weekend I looked at my
bank statement only to see that They had made a debit of 95.00 and a debit
of a whopping 200.00 which gave me 45 dollars in bank fees and bounced the
95.00 dollar payment and my car payment. I called my bank and they said they
would send it back. I called my car payment place and they said that was
fine and that they could run it again no worries. Well now this weekend I
got a letter from Merrick saying I owe 295.00 plus a return charge they are
again calling me on sunday and when I went to call back the machine keeps
tell!
ing me to try some other time. I am disgusted with merrick bank none of the
other companies I have dealt with are this low. Once I am paid off I am
closing this card and will tell all my friends what a poor job this company
has done. |

Complaint:
Warning to current Merrick Bank Secured MasterCard holders - Firstly, if you
are financially able, close your account--but before you close it make sure
you paid the balance off via money gram this will eliminate the delay in
processing the refund of your deposit. Secondly, the interest rate is too
high; you may have to search but you can find bank or credit unions secured
cards with lower interest's rates. Thirdly, Merrick reports to the credit
bureaus that the account is a secured account which will result your current
score to drop significantly i.e.: say your credit score is 619 with a credit
line is $300 and you make a charge of $175 your credit score will drop to
607 (any activity using the account will have direct impact on your score)
is mostly because of the type of account and how Merrick is reporting it to
credit bureaus.
I am currently a Merrick customer; however, after I spoke with customer
service and they advised that they do not offer unsecured lines at all.
Where is the opportunity to benefit or reestablish yourself the only thing
Merrick offers is plastic using your own money with outlandish interest and
fees. So, don't become a victim for me I have cut my card, paying my
balance down and plan to close the account before December 2005. |

Complaint: This is about the FOURTH time Merrick Bank has intentionally held
my payment in order to charge me a late fee. The first 2 times I thought it
was noones fault and they credited my account, then I noticed that this is
the ONLY credit card I have that needs the payment sent 2 weeks before your
due date in order for them to post it to your account on time. For example,
I had a payment due on 11/6, I submitted my payment through my bill pay
through my bacnk account. It was mailed out to Merrick Bank and cleared my
bank account on 11/4-2 days BEFORE the payment was due. Merrick Bank then
charged me a late fee and did not post this payment to my account until
11/13! NINE DAYS LATER! I faced them a copy of my bank statement so they
could see the payment cleared my account and they told me that since they
had credited late fees in the past, that they would not do it again. But
what they do not seem to understand is that they credited me late fees
becuase it was not my fa!
ult they did not post the payment for over a week! They are HORRIBLE!!! I
wish there was a way to make a formal complaint becuase apparently they do
this on purpose to make more money on late fees and hope you don't notice. |

Complaint: Merrick Bank is obviously a very unscrupulous company, as you
can see from the numerous complaints against them. Here is what they did to
me. Out of the blue with no late payments ect., they raised my anual fee
from $3 dollars payed monthy, to $10. That's right they more than tripled
it. From what I understand this is not illegal. So what is to stop them from
making it a hundred dollars a month or a thousand? Stay away from these
thieves, if you get an offer in the mail shred it then burn it and run. |

Yes, they have the funds in their account. They claim it takes them 10 days

Complaint: I received a notice from Merrick that I was pre-approved for a
$750 limit Visa card. As I had just gone through a bankruptcy, I jumped at
the chance to start rebuilding my credit. I got right on the internet and

Today I received a letter (4 days after the internet confirmation)stating
that they cannot confirm my address (hello? why'd you send me a letter and
how did I get it?) and that I need to send them copies of my social security
card, my W-2, a pay stub, a bank statment and my driver's license. Now this
smells like an identity theft scam. We have enough problems with that
without offering up the info willingly. After reading all the postings on

From reading this list I can see I am not alone. Merrick bank cashed my
mailed paper check electronically and I have my bank statement but they have
not yet credited my account. I called and was told it takes 10 days after
received for payment to post. I am not being charged a late payment fee.
This was 22 days ago............... Called today, still no late payment fee
they were very nice about assuring me that I would not be charged any late
payment fee but could not answer me as to why on day 23 after they received
and electronically cashed my check the funds are not available to me.
My balance is ZERO when/if they ever credit my payment and once I have a
statement with the zero balance I am closing this card.
These people are just plain weird to deal with. I haven't experienced any
rudeness just a real twilight zone mentality.
Stay away from Merrick Bank. The offer was great $2,000.00 credit limit and
$30.00 annual fee and APR under 15% but after 14 months of this payment
delay I've had enough. My other card is $59.00 a year annual fee and
$2,500.00 credit limit and 21% APR but I've been with them for 3 years and
have never once had any issues at all. So I'll pay more to have no hassle.
Also, Merrick SELLS names, addresses, and worst of all telephone numbers big

back from Merrick Bank stating that the copies enclosed proved that it was a

Complaint_against: Merrick Bank
Complaint:
I have also become a victim of this Co. via their hold to post and charge
late fees. What they did to me was hold my payment (paid with their online
services) and then I made another charge....days after the payment cleared
my bank. They assessed me late fees of $30, then there was a misc. charge of
$30 the next day. I called to inquire about this charge and was told it was
a late fee, to which I pointed out the late fee to them, even though they
clearly showed my payment as on time. It was explained to me that the
reason was my payment was due, I paid late, but because 15 days passed
before they recieved payment and the $30 fee they charged me made me go over
my limit, I was assesed another fee. Huh?? I wasn't late? I paid on time.
They told me it was explained in my copy of my account agreement? I never
got one....I had called to ask informtion when I got the card, as I didn't
know anything about it.
When I requested a copy of the account agreement, I was told it would cost
me $6.50......you've got to be kidding me....the paper it is written on
isn't worth that much, and certainly not the ink or the stamp they used to
print and send it.
I told them that if they didn't provide this I would be calling the attorney
General and reporting them, they said they would send it this one time.
That's all I needed, one time.Well, needless to say I got it and it isn't on
there and not to mention there is nothing about going 15 days crap...which I
didn't understand but figured this pamphlet would explain, so off to calling
them again.Called again and was told that there is a $30 late fee, a $45
over limit fee and a $30 charge for going 15 days without payment when over
the limit fee??? What's this now I asked? Their answer that it ws in this
phamphlet.....I don['t think so I explained I had one in front of me, and
was told that it was the wrong one. Again I was told I would be charged for
a subsequent one....what they sent me the wrong one the first time. I
refused to hang up each time till I was satisfied, explaining I would call
the attorney General and take care of this with the better business buearu.
I got the $30 charge wiped off, and after constant arguing got the $45
charge off too, explaining to them the simples of the math, that if they had
never charged me wrongfully of the $30 they would never have had to charge
me the $45 then too. Once that was wiped off, I hung up, waited 2 days and
called back complaing that they wiped off charges and because of wipeing the
charges I never went 15 days without dealing with the overlimit fee, forcing
them to remove the second $30 charge. (not that I didn't have to fight them
yet again)I find this Co. to operate outside the governing laws by which
they should obide. If you feel you are dealing with difficulty, by law you
are allowed to dispute charges and fees, and until they are fully
investigated, you are not obligated to pay for these charges and/or fees.
You do however still owe them your original charges and fees properly
incrued, so you still need to make your payments.I recommend anyone dealing
with this situation to continue to make payments on money you owe, make a
dispute in writing and send it registered letter, requesting a copy of the
investigation results, the file a formal complaint with the better business
buearu. It takes time and lots of complaints to get anything done through the
better business buearu, plus evidence of foul play, so get copies of card
and your bank statements (showing fraudulant charges and dates checks
cleared the account)as they will request copies. From experience, I can tell
you this works (it wasn't this co. but another that asks for banking info.
so they can "verify" your information and then charge you almost $200
without your consent)Also, write to all 3 credit buearu's, adding statements
to your credit accounts, that you dispute the amount of the accounts and
why. Ask that this be added to your credit report, so further creditors can
see what you are dealing with, it may help because Merrick bank will try to
ruine your credit. It worked for me and actually got some stuff cleared from
my credit report, giving me a better score.Sorry for being so long winded,
but thought maybe I could help out fellow Merrick "screw everyone in their
Wake" Bank.I found by doing what I did, I saved myself a lot of hassle..it
only took me 3 months to totally resolve the issue and close my account
sucessfully (1 month was tied up in getting the account closed...nother long
story!!) |

Years ago, I opened an account with a credit card company. I moved and
notified all creditors. I received a letter stating they needed more
verification. I should explain that I was in my early twenties and naive
about credit, so I didn't follow up.
Eventually, my debt was sold to Merrick Bank. I recently made a commitment
to myself to repair my credit and pay off debts. I started researching
credit repair and read many books on the subject. I was amazed to see how
many inaccuracies there are on my credit report. EVERYONE SHOULD CHECK
THEIRS IMMEDIATELY.
I contacted Merrick Bank and asked them to verify my debt. They sent a
letter stating if I paid a certain amount they would forgive 70% of my
debt. After weighing all the options, it seemed like a reasonable solution,
so I paid them.
I received a letter yesterday, from another debt collection agency, stating
Merrick had sold my "forgiveness amount" to them. I was livid.
I have since calmed down and now I am happy because my new commitment is to
causing as much trouble, legally of course, for Merrick Bank. I'm glad you
picked a fight with me Merrick Bank because I'm not the stupid consumer I
once was. In fact, I get off on taking on big shots like you. I will not
stop. I am dedicating my life to ruining you.

tells you something, now they claim they havent received our payment and its
late again. It doesnt take as long as they say to reach them and not getting
a statement is ridiculous, we dont want to pay for something we dont know
what we are paying for, plus up till we moved we had never ever been late
with them. The past !3 months with them hasnt been pleasant, hope everyone
takes notice. |

Complaint:
Used online bill pay service to make payment to pay card off for $61. Next
day, checked my bank's online banking and found debit for $610.00! I always
keep copies of my online payment receipt and it said $61! My bank wouldn't
return the ACH, as they should have because it was an errornous amount, and
instead charged me a $30 stop payment fee and bounced a couple of my checks,
resulting in charges there as well. Merrick said my payment was submitted at
$610, even though my confirmation said $61. They charged me a NSF fee when
the ACH was returned, set my rate to default, charged me a late fee and an
over limit fee because they closed my account after the payment per my
request and the returned payment made me over my "$0" credit limit. Wow.
Cost me a lot of money to payoff a $61 card. |

Complaint: This is not a complaint, but a thank you to all the folks that
made the complaints, i was recently sent an invitation to accept the merrick
bank card with a 1500 credit line guarnteed. after reading all the
complaints i am no longer interested in this company. I think if everyone
did a back ground check on these company's things of this nature wouldn't
happen to the consumer. Please folks check this companies out before you
give them all your information with all the ID theft going on. PLEASE BE
CAREFUL IN THE FUTURE. |

Complaint: This is a "thank you" to those who posted a complaint on this
company. I am one who also received an offer of credit of $750 and thought
this would be good to help re-establish my credit. I NEVER read complaints,
but something prompted me to do this. I am astounded, and exhausted, from
reading the complaints on Merrick Bank. I'd rather not have a credit card
than have to deal with a company that has unrealistic expectations,
unprofessional people who make 'errors' using people's debit accounts,
massive delays in posting payments, and on and on. I'd rather just save up
my money and put it in a savings account and use a debit card. I am amazed
at the complaints and the very low success rate folks had dealing with this
financial institution. Is there truly nothing anyone can do? I find this
hard to believe!! I also thank the ex-employee who 'blew the whistle' on
training their employees to be thieves..... |

No real complaint against Merrick, but add my name to the list of "recieved
an offer"...did a bit of background checking and oh, so sorry, Merrick; you
suck like katie couric. The great thing is, they sent along a postage paid
envelope. I keep these and stuff them with other "through the mail" offers
and send 'em back...making THEM pick up the postage! Just make sure no
personal info is on the papers you stuff....I've sent newspaper clippings,
shreddings, jehovas witness info...I think I'll send merrick an ashtray full
of cigarette ashes...at their expense. |

Complaint:
i have had a card with them for over 8 years and i paid 2732.00 last month
to pay off the entire amount (i was going through a divorce and didn't have
the money to pay the entire amount off for 2 years i paid double the minimum
payment instead) i found that they were charging me 32% interest and called
to complain about it and was told they weren't accepting any requests for
reductions on interest. five years ago i paid off this card and they cut
the interest in half-i don't own any other cards with this high of interest
and told them to have someone call me about it and instead they cancelled my
card.
if you aren't aware of this let me tell you--your fico score is greatly
affected if you cancel a card you have had for some time (even if it has a
zero balance) you are better off cancelling a card right away.
they suck!!! |

Complaint: I opened an account and immediately paid the $36 annual fee which
they did post quickly. Two days later I get a letter of revision in my
Cardholder agreement that I acknowledge that courts located in Utah would
have proper jurisdiction to hear any matters related to the agreement and
that I agree to service of process for any disputes "using certified mail
from the US Postal Service or other courier service and herby acknowledge
that the signature of any person found at your residence or other address on
such mailing receipt will serve as satisfactory proof that process was
served upon you..." "or other address on such mailing receipt" gives me the
impression they can send the certified letter wherever they want to
(including their own address) and as long as somebody at that address signs
for it, no matter if you have had any affiliation with that address or
not...you're screwed. I called and closed my account, now I just hope they
don't try to steal my identi!
ty or try to run a fake charge on the card to make me have to pay more
before the account is confirmed to be closed...which I'm fully expecting at
this point. |
