Complaint:
Discover had just mail notice to customers of change in rules.  They will now use the "universal default" system.  If any "creditor" anywhere in the world says you are in default, Discover will consider you in default also = whatever they want to do: higher rates, revoke card, etc.  This means inflated rate on previous balance, as I understand it.

This seems to be common practice in one way or another, although not quite as severe, in the cases I have checked so far, as the Discover one.  For example, a VISA account I have says they may decide on the basis of credit information that I am no longer "credit worthy" and deny me credit.  That doesn't sound unreasonable - if they wish to deny me further credit.  But, to increase my rate for previous charges is
another matter!

Does anyone have further information on various cards and thier use (or hopefully, non-use of "universal default" policy?  One may do a search for "Universal Default" and find many warnings, newspaper articles, etc. on the subject, but little on how one might avoid the problem.

Complaint:
This concerns Discover Card's (Discover Bank) unwillingness to work with its customers. In June of 1998 I refinanced my house and paid off all my bills including my Discover Card.  The next month I find out from Discover that they gave me an incorrect balance and the check the lending company sent them was about $120.00 short.  To make a long story short, we had some misfortune, I got behind with them, and now today, after the card was made inactive in 1998, I still owe them $726.00.  Since they charge a usury rate that would make a loan shark blush, and after making payments either minimum or more as I could, they refuse to negociate the $600.00 in interest fees.
Do they care how much money they have received over the past six years?  Are they willing to wave some of the interest fees on an account that hasn't been used for SIX YEARS! NO!  These greedy S.O.Bs only repeated response is "Discover dosen't negociate accounts".
Well, I'm not going to be thier cash cow anymore.  Most would look at the balance and say it's a small amount, but to us it's the difference between paying our mortage and utilites or giving money to a $22 Billion corporation.  So I have no choice to let it go into collection. At least I can negociate with them.

Complaint: When trying to consolidate my credit, I decided to close my account with Discover card.  Little did I know I would be completely harassed when trying to close the account.  Mike, the customer service agent, would not close the account without asking me numerous questions--when I answered, he would not take my answer as final, but proceeded to try to further change my mind and keep my Discover card.  I cannot emphasize enough how frustrating this became.  Upon hearing my frustration Mike continued to badger me, and would not simply close the account, like I asked. I felt horribly harrassed and was nearly in tears by the time I hung up.

DiscoverCard deceived me.  Sign up for AccountGuard, the Customer Service Rep said.  Because I carry a zero balance every month, he said, the service would be free.  Imagine my surprise to find a charge for this "free" service on my account.  The material they sent me said clearly "call this number to activate your benefits."  I did not call the number, but they activated my "benefits" anyway.

Here is how they get you, which I noticed when reading the material they sent me to "look over": "This protection costs you nothing if you have a zero account balance on the last day of your billing period."  AHA!  THAT's the trick, the little weasels.  In order to have a zero balance on the last day of your billing period, you would have to NOT USE THE CREDIT CARD.  The Customer Service Rep failed to mention that little tidbit.

BEWARE OF CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS BEARING FREE BENEFITS!!!!  It is more than likely that you are being deceived.

Complaint: I returned a Discover Credit Card offer which offered free balance transfers and a 0 % intrest rate for the duration of the account as long as it remained in good standing and 2 purchases were made each and every month until balance was totally paid off.  I supplied the Dicover Card Company with the 2 cards I wanted transfered, that included all account numbers, names etc... They in turn sent me a card with insufficient credit to cover the transfer, wanted a huge fee for each transfer, and then stated to me that neither company (the credit card companies I wanted to transfer) would supply them with the information they needed to transfer the funds. I sent them the information they needed. This was just a bogus excuse. They were totally unreasonable to deal with, and I am now stuck with a card I will never use, and a lower credit score due to these fraudulent ways in which Discover Card handles their business. My advice to anyone thinking of doing business with this credit card company....Get all promises in writing before any agreement with them.

DISCOVER CARD.

I said yes to the ACCOUNT GUARD SERVICE and I have now been charged about $700.00 in fees as a result.  It put my account over the limit.  Because of some financial difficulties I have experienced I was about a week late on a few of my payments, this charged me late charges on top of that.  When I called Discover Card to see if they could assist me with this situation, they were not willing to help, but they were not pleasant to work with either.  They have a structure of rules there and you are not a client, you are a number.  They were willing to put me on a payment plan of 3x's the payment I currently cannont handle just to pay off THEIR FEES!  They thought that this was the best thing they could have ever offered me and wondered why I was upset about it.

I work with American Express on a regular basis and they are wonderful, they have worked with me during my difficult time and have not charged me any over the limit fees, late fees, anything...They have worked with me, I have worked with them.  I love them!

Discover Card, let's just say, the only reason they are in business is because they are stealing from people, They are horrible to work with, shame on this company.

If I can help 1 person say NO to these stealing, rude, people I will feel better about the situation.

Complaint: Discover card sent me a notice that I would be upgraded to a platinum card. Soon after that I recieved a new credit card in the mail. Soon after that I recieved another credit card in the mail. My mistake for not watching account #'s, I asked Discover card to transfer the balance of the new card(300.00) to my exiting old account so I would only have one account to pay. They refused to transfer one of the accounts to the other. I have closed the new account, and I will pay both bills, but it's goodbye Discover card.

WATCH OUT FOR BALANCE TRANSFER AT 0%.  ONCE YOU DO THEY MAKE YOU PAY OFF IMMEDIATELY THE NEXT MONTH.  YOUR PURCHASES DURING THE MONTH ARE THEN CHARGED AT A HIGH INTEREST RATE BECAUSE YOUR PAYMENTS ARE APPLIED TO THE TRANSFER FIRST AND AFTER THAT IS PAID OFF THEN YOUR PAYMENT WILL APPLY TO THE PURCHASES.  THEY TRICK YOU FRAUDULENTLY INTO THINKING YOU RECEIVE A BALANCE TRANSFER FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WITHOUT INTERSTE.

Discover Card Complaint -

This should rate very high on the class action complaint list.  Discover promised (and I recorded the conversation) that they would guarantee a low interest rate for the life of a transfer balance if I got the register service for the same period of time (to pay off balance).  The register costs $2.49 per month.  At the time, I had no balance on the card.

I paid on the balance and always paid more than required every month with no late payments or issues what so ever.

Recently, I noticed that my rate went up.  The original rate was 5.9%.  They just bumped it up to 10.24%.  I called and then said "oops" it was a mistake and they would take care of it.  I called 6 days later to see if it had been taken care of.  The next person I talked to "Susan in Utah" said that well it looks like the policy has changed and since I did not make any charges on the account, the interest rate went up.  I told Susan about the other call and she says "oh, yes... oh well the other person shouldn't have told me it was taken care of".  Susan says that it is now under consideration.

My guess is that Discover "hooked" thousands into paying for a service and promising a low interest rate only to raise the rate prior to payoff.

Let's see... thousands(maybe more) X cost of interest rate increase + thousands X cost of register service + cost of interest on register service = big money for the attorney that takes this on and putting a dent in Credit Card company's ability to do this again.  I don't want a dime if an attorney wants to take this on.  I just want to put a dent in the pocket book of Discover so they don't do this again.  I want to send a message to all Credit Card companies.

Complaint:

In October, I called Discover Card to close my account because they froze my account due to my mistake of paying $4.00 below my minimum payment. The woman protested and refused to do it. So I hung up on her because she was very rude and disrespctful to me. Today, I tried to charge my car inspection on the Discover Card and to my shock and horror, my mechanic told me that it was denied! Puzzled, I run home and call them to see why since I have a $10,000 credit line and knew I didn't go over it. The man said that the account was closed back in October. I told him that I made this request and the woman refused to do it and then asked him how they were able to close it without notifying me first. I then asked him to open the account again and he said no. He then has the nerve to ask me if I wanted to open a new account! Meanwhile, I made a payment to my hospital with the Discover Card account and because these idiots still sent me statements claiming that I had $10,000 credit l!
ine, how was I supposed to know that it was closed?
The only discovery I made with the Discover Card was that they can close your account on a whim and not even tell you causing you great suffering!

Complaint:
I have not been able to use my Discover card because I "closed" it three years ago, due to the lies and harassments courteous of those friendly Discover employees.  For three years, over-the-limit (OTL) fees have raised my balance up an additional $1200 - (in OTL fees alone!), even though the account is closed.
I entered into an agreement in August of 2004 with the customer service department.  The woman who set up the agreement, Sydney, promised that for seven months, as long as I allowed an automatic payment to be deducted from my account, the over-the-limit fees would be waived and Discover would apply a $70 credit to match my payment.  For two months the OTL fees actually were waived.  Discover cardholders know what I am about to say next - the third month an OTL fee appeared on my statement, and they have appeared ever since.  The seventh month just ended in January 2005, and with my $75 payments AND Discover's $70 credits, which were applied monthly, my balance has only decreased $400 in the last seven months.
Do not trust the promises that the credit representatives make.  They will promise the world to get permission to deduct from your personal checking accounts.
This month will be the first month that I have to manually begin making the monthly payment again.  I have decided not to pay them another dime.  My original balance, before their ridiculous late fees and over-the-limit fees, was only about $995.  I have more than paid them the amount that I originally borrowed.  My current balance is $3100.  This is $3100 worth of Discover's fees, and none of the original amount that I borrowed.  They can take this balance and stick it where the sun never shines.  I will wait until it goes into their collections, and I may not even pay it then.

DISCOVER GOLD:
I applied for a Discover Gold card in October. I went to  www.lowermybills.com and it clearly stated that I would have 0 APR on
purchases and balance transfers for an entire year. I even called to confirm this with a representative when I received the card to double check. I receved this offer for one month only and now I've been charged since November for finance charges. I've called up 3 times but they are giving me the run around. DO NOT APPLY FOR ANY DISCOVER CARD! Not only did they lie to me but the customer service has been extremely rude and I am disgusted.

Complaint:
I just had two of my credit card companies steal money out of my checking account. My wife (a flight attendent) was furlowed after 9-11 and I was in self employed in advertising. My business collapsed overnight and half the ad agencies in denver went out of business in the next year so I had to find a new career. It took some time and I landed in real estate. I lived on my credit until I had enough income to pay my bills which resulted in several cards having high balances. I have always had a good credti score (high 700's) and wanted to protect it as it was an asset in my new business. I could see that I wanst going to make it with all my high card payments so I called them and asked if there was anything they could do to help.

They said since I was current, there were no programs for me. I called credit counseling places and they said the only way they could help is if I stopped paying my bills and fall way behind. Big help. Inevitably I fell behind, which resulted in late fees and my interest going up to as much as 29.3% on some cards.

I still dont have steady income so their "hardship" programs wouldnt work for me. i have been trying to settle since I get lump sums in my new business. At least 30% of my current balances are the result of them kicking me while I was down but they will not settle for a reasonable amount.

I just received a lump sum payment, most of which has to be paid to my financial partner, so the money wasnt even mine, and Discover and Citicard both took money out of my checking account paying the accounts off in full leaving me totally broke.

I have paid payments over the phone before but never signed an agreement saying they could take money out. they have taken all my money and I cant pay for anything now.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Is there a way to start a class action suit against multiple card companies since they all seem to be crooks.

Thanks

Andy

I work at the Denver Marriott City Center Hotel as Front Desk Agent. Our previous guest named Gregg Yorkison called in around 11:30pm tonight, asking about certain HOLD on his money from his credit card, and the only way to take it away is to call the Discover Card and request to take it off by giving the MERCHANT ID NO.

I spoke to a customer representative named "Brooke" with employee ID#16089. I was surprised by her attitude that she showed me. She was very rude, aside from the fact the she was not helpful at all. I can not believe that Discover Card would hire that type of employee.  When I gave comments about her attitude towards me, she just suddenly hang up the phone.

I as well, work customer service for at least 7 years, but I never been rude to any guest.  I just do not think it is right, and caller should not be like a "shock-absorber" if the representative is not in a good mood. Even though I am not the cardholder, but the fact that I am calling to help your cardholder solve his problem , I, at least tried to help the guest.

This is just to address the situation to your office to inform you that certain type of service might affect your stability in the industry.  I could not imagine how many people in a day that she speak to with the same kind of manner.

I hope you can find ways to solve this type of problem.

Sincerely,

Elena

Complaint:
While reviewing my Discover card balance for the month, I noticed a $45 charge for "the Register".  Not knowing what this was for, I called the 800 number and was told it was a renewal of the register for credit card
protection.  I told them I had never had this service so how could they "renew" it.  I asked them to reverse the charge. No one seemed surprised by this occurance nor did anyone apologize. My issue is that this was not a mistake on the part of Discover card.  It was fully intentional on their part as they KNEW I had never had this subscription before.  It is my opinion that this is fraudulent as they charged my account for something I did not authorize.  Before they would allow me to have the account closed I was transferred 4 times, was disconnected once and finally had to listen to a spiel by an account rep telling me everything I could get including a 0% balance transfer. I am appauled and fully intend to continue to make complaints regarding this company.  Don't let this happen to you!  Make sure you scrutinize all of your charges each month and research those that do not look familiar!

Watch out for discover card balance tranfers

I decided to take advantage of one of their 5.9% balance transfers and when  I recieved my next statement my interest rate had gone up from about 13% to 19.74%.  When I figured out the average balance it came out to about 13.5%.  I have not missed a payment  in over two years and have paid my balance off completly several times since, so there was no reason for the increase.

I called there customer service center and they told me the increase was due to a jump in the prime rate.  Since I happen to work in the financial industry I am quite familiar with the prime rate and I know for sure it did not increase 6% in the last month.  When I told them this was b.s. they quickly reduced my rate to 12%..

Complaint:
Several years ago I got behind in payments and was not able to get caught up due to many other financial problems I was having. I owed approximately $1,500.  I called Discover several times requesting a plan to lower my monthly payment and hold late fees, etc.  They refused saying there was nothing they could do they didn't have any plans availalbe. Then my balance was up to around $2,600. by now I'm over the limit so they started tacking on over the limit fees, lates fees and finance charges.  I went several months not accepting their phone calls at home; they then started calling me at work (I have told them 5 times, today 5/31/05 being the last time) not to call me at work because I was not allowed to accept those types of personal phone calls at work.)  I can guarantee you they will call me at work next week again!
Last year I accepted one of their calls and all of a sudden they could offer me a year plan paying $30. a month deducted directly from my checking account and said I should try to pay more, etc. etc.  I told them I would do my best.  After the year was up (no notification that it was up) I was still several hundred dollars over my credit limit, they started tacking on late fees, over the limit fees, finance fees again.  It wasn't until the second month after the year was up that I realized it and when I called them they said we don't have to notify you your year was up.  I asked them if they could extend me for 6 more months and by then I was sure I could be caught up to pay the monthly payments but they said they had no plans available but I could call them on a certain date (which was the day after my next monthly payment was due) and they might have a plan by then.  So in that three month time span they had tacked on all the money that I had paid them during that year.  !
Then they started calling me leaving messages that they had a great plan for me and they were sure I would be pleased, etc. etc.  They are not interested in me paying off this debt to them, only playing games.  So I have refused to pay them anymore money and told them so; they continue to leave 2 or 3 messages a day on my home answerinE machinE and call me at work at least once or twice a day, even though I have informed them not to call me at work.  I will be registering a complaint with everyone I can find to register one with because they are the worst credit card company I have ever had.  I have several other credit debts I am working at paying off and the majority of them have been able to offer plans to help except Discover Card.  If that's not bad enough several times when they called my home my son would answer and they would ask who he was, and would only identify themselves by a first name and not that they were from Discover until after he asked for a message seve!
ral times; now he just hangs up on them per my instructions.  I recommend no credit cards but if you must get one DO NOT GET DISCOVER.

Complaint:
Discover Card (DC) is FAMOUS for poor customer service.  They called my home AT LEAST 3 times a day (I have recorded more than 10 calls a day in some instances) simply because my balance was over the limit (OTL).  However, please keep in mind that entire time I was paying my bill (at least the minimum due, and some times more than that) ON TIME EVERY MONTH.  That's amazing to me.

On top of that, one day I actually answered the phone when a DC Rep called me at like 8:30 at night.  He was abusive, yelled at me, and was rude.  When I asked him why DC calls so many times a day and if he thought it was harassment, he said "no" and proceeded to tell me that if "people like [me] would pay their bill" then DC wouldn't have to be calling like that.  Again, keep in mind he can see my account history and SEE THAT I WAS PAYING MY BILL MONTHLY - ON TIME.  I don't know how much more rude you can be to someone; especially someone who is PAYING THEIR BILL ON TIME, EVERY MONTH.

I hung up on him and called back to speak to another representative.  She said, "I don't know why he said those things to you, I can clearly see you've been paying your bill and he was looking at the same screen I have up now."

This happened in June of 2004.

DC is the absolute worst.  They don't care how their employees treat their customers because nothing ever happens to them.  They never get sued.  Consumers never make them pay.

Complaint: I also was taken for a ride by Discover. After being a faithful and trusting costumer of Discover for years I decided to respond to their offer of balance transfers. I transfered a rather huge balance from another card and was completely satisfied with my actions. The letter  offering this transfer stated that if I made two purchases during May 2005 and every month thereafter my 0% APR will be extended. Imagine my surprise when I noticed the finance charge on my statement after I made these purchases in May. I called with an expectation to nicely informed them about their mistake and accept their apology. In response, I was treated rudily, the first reporesentative I talked with told me that if "I wanted to argue I should another place". She even refuses to switch me to a supervisor. This supervisor was very nice and transferred me to a person who was very responsive, listened to me reading the excerpt from their own solicitation and went to reverse the charge. Ho!
wever, after a few minutes of waiting for him I was disconnected. When I called again, I spoke to another supervisor who refused to switch me to the unit, which deals with my complaint and kept "helping" me understand what they meant by saying during May 2005. I have talked to five people from Discover costumer service and they all could not understand the legal and common meaning of the phrase "during May 2005". They kept telling me waht they meant and that I should have known that I needed to make these purchases not in MAy but actually in April becasue May is closed at Disover on May 5th (how cold they even speak about "during May"). Not only that they seemed to be totally ignorant of the issue that their own solicitation created but they were not responsive and seemed rude and almost insultive.

Complaint: I had a Discover card for almost 10 years, payments were always timely & the account had been paid off & closed. A few months later I recieved there "wonderful" 0% balance transfer offer with the agreement to make 2 purchases per month to maintain that rate. All was well until I was late on my 2 purchases for the month of October 2004 (I was in the hospital after having a baby) they then raised my rate to around 12%. Once I had gone back to work my hours were slowly cut down & before I knew it I was taking in a less money every month. I called Discover to tell them that until my hours picked up I would only be able to afford minimal monthly payments. The told me "they do not negotiate with anyone" & that they would "absolutely not" provide me with documentation of my attempt to negotiate with them. the will not consider my previous account relationship or previous good standing on this account. For the past 3 months I have been sending in payments on time but unde!
r the minimum required & I continue to get charged late fees, over the limit fees & 27% interest (which is about approx $200 in charges a month) I have spoke to managers, hardship reps, financial specialists & anyone else who would listen & no one will help me. All I wanted to do was come to a payment agreement. They have also been calling me up to 8 times per day to harass me. This HAS TO BE illegal.

Complaint:
I was an excellent customer for 8 years, ran up balances, paid the high interest rates, paid extra fees and several times maintained a zero balance with Discover Card for months at a time. When I fell behind I realized that they absolutely want you to be owing to them for the rest of your life.

Illness, divorce proceedings and income loss hit all at once and Discover was ABSOLUTELY INSANE about any excuses.I was no longer a customer but a nuisance to their operation.  They harassed until one time I sent them $600+ to bring my payments to current status and then they rewarded me by sending it to a lawyer.  This lawyer was so inept, his office kept filing the wrong papers at the courthouse, they lied to the judge three times and they wasted alot of time when all they had to do was LISTEN to reason. Too bad, this became business, not loyalty for me,  they won't get another quarter cent from me. " It's a bad debt Discover- you screwed up the credit decision- take the loss and move on !! "

They just dont care.  They issue credit and take chances and then when they guess wrong about business credit decisions they cry like babies and pay off our 'trusted' politicians to reward them by passing federal laws encouraging slavery, usury, and downright mafioso behavior.

Any credit problem can be solved by good citizens. First of all, the fine print and bait and switch and all the 'legal' disclosures are deceiving to the normal person.  Any 10 year old would say 'this is unfair' if they were read the rules - Secondly, when we owe a credit card raqueteer, they should realize they made enough money and greed will get them nothing.  they should be happy to get back a percent of the principal balance and call it good. and lastly, we need to be vigilant about the basic economic laws of production should equal or exceed consumption.

It would be wonderful if people woke up to the slavery they are under and STOPPED paying on all credits cards for 60 days. Sometimes the slaves need a little nudge to go on strike.
The credit card industry is illegal as heck and we can t find lawyers to take the fight.

Complaint: Back in 2004 I tried to close my Discover card and pay it off in full.  A Gentle man got on the phone and talked me into a doing a balance transfer of another card and assured me there would be no finance charges occured on this transfer for the life of the transfer.  I must of went over this with him 3 or 4 times because I did not believe him.  He assured me that there would be 0% for the life of this specific transfer without any stipulations.  I trusted him and for a year all was well, until this year I started seeing finance charges.  I called and they told me I was wrong and that what the gentle man told me could never of been true, you have to make at least 2 purchases after a year.  I wish I had this conversation on tape because I know what I heard, that is the only reason I kept the card open.  Anyway, now in 2005 I went to close the account and pay in full and I was harrassed and it was very difficult to pay this off and close the account with out a hasse!
l.  I will definately never have a discover card again and I will make sure all my friends and family are aware so they will think twice before opening an account with them also.

Complaint_against: Discovery Card and credit reporting practices... really mean...

Complaint: I have a big problem with the discovery card company.   They must be really hurting people for money.   I had arranged to have the bills paid automatically by the bank but there was a screw up.   The bill didn't get paid for 2-3 months.   After explaining this to them they canceled the card and filed a bad credit report against me.   Be real careful about your credit rating with these folks.  They are mean...

Complaint: Discover Card sent me a letter in September saying that fraud had occurred with my account.  I called them, heard the details about the fraudulent charges, closed that account and opened a new Discover Card account.  When I mailed in my payment, Discover Card credited it to the "closed" account. I started receiving phone calls to my cellphone two days after my payment due date. When I answered them I heard a recorded message "Please call 1-866-516-" When I called the number, I heard another message saying, "Thank you for calling Discover Card, please enter your 16-digit account number."  I was told my payment hadn't been received (because it had been credited to the closed account) and that I was getting these annoying phone messages because my account was two days past due!  Needless to say, I completely cancelled my Discover Card.

Box number and they have to give you a managers name.  They can not deny you that.  I had to send a letter to those rude s.o.b.'s and it worked.  I no longer any calls from them.

Complaint_against: Discover Card

Complaint: I received a letter from Discover Credit Card with an enclosed credit card that I would need to call to activate. Since I never have had an account with them, my husband called to tell them we didn't want a Discover Card. He was told that since the card was in my name that I would need to cancel it myself. I spoke to the service rep and she transferred me to "retention" personnel who gave me a spiel on why I needed to keep the card. I told him I had never opened an acct with them and had not received previous correspondence from them so I really had no account to keep open. The rep was adamant to the point of belligerence that I needed to activate the card and transfer all my other credit card balances to Discover. I again refused and he said that he would need to speak to my husband in order to close the acct. I explained that my husband had already been told that I needed to close it. He said he wouold not close the acct unless he spoke to my husband. My husband!
then spoke to him and insisted that the acct be closed. The rep refused saying he needed to go through his sales pitch or would not close the acct. My husband said he refused to listen to him and hung up the phone. I doubt that they closed our acct, but I did report them to a federal agency to see if they could help.

Complaint: I just recently had my Discover card interest rate jump from 11.75% INTEREST to 26.24% rate because of paying late.  Even though I also incurred their $39 late fee, as well.  The day after they raised my interest rate I got a call from another dept in Discover offering what I believe was some sort of insurance that would cover me if I couldn't make a payment---The person on the phone from Discover stated he was calling me as I'd been a reliable customer of their's.  I hate this company and quite frankly think there is no protection from the fees and the interest rates that Discover or other credit card companies can charge with little or no explanation.  There needs to be legislation passed to protect the consumer from these rates that can be raised at their whim and without any sort of warning.

Complaint:
I recently transfered a few balances from other credit cards to a 0% APR offer from Discover Card. I received my first bill and paid the minimum balance, well before the due date. I have never missed a credit card payment...ever. Today I received a call from Discover saying I was 43 days delinquent on my bill...and I found this very disturbing considering 1) I had already sent the payment 2) The due date for the FIRST payment was only 6 days ago! I found it even more suspicious when the service rep. went out of her way to tell me "if you are late again, we cannot maintain yor 0% APR." Luckily, I have never been late on a payment, however, I have a strong suspicion they are ACTIVELY TRYING to make people late! I understand that the postal service can lose/misplace mail, AS CAN THEIR RECEIVING DEPARTMENT, but all the clues point to something quite devious. I had her immediately transfer the payment from my account and told her I would look into this "missing" check. THIS WHOL!
E 0% DEAL SEEMS LIKE A ELABORATE AND POTENTIALLY ILLEGAL SCAM TO ACTIVELY GET PEOPLE TO TRANSFER BALANCES FROM OTHER CARDS AND GET THE ACCOUNT HOLDER TO BE LATE BY ANY METHOD AT THEIR DISPOSAL, INCLUDING: "NEVER RECEIVED PAYMENTS", WARNINGS ABOUT NO MORE "CHANCES" IN MAINTAINING THE OFFERED APR. I'M SURE THEY HAVE PLENTY OF OTHER "CON ARTIST-LIKE" TACTICS IN THEIR CORPORTAE PLAYBOOKS. THE VERY NATURE OF THE DEAL, REQUIRING CONSTANT PURCHASES TO MAINTAIN THE 0%APR IS A TACTIC IN ITSELF. JUST ONE FORGETFUL MOMENT AND THEY WILL SAY, "WE WARNED YOU ONCE!"
**********************************************************************
I WILL CERTAINLY BE LOOKING INTO THIS "LOST CHECK" AND I HAVE A PLAN TO CATCH DISCOVER IN IT'S OWN QUESTIONABLE TACTICS AND POTENTIALLY OPEN UP A VERY HIGH PROFILE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IF MY COUNTER-TACTIC PROVES SUCCESSFUL IN DOCUMENTING ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES. ANYONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCED SIMILAR OR RELATED PROBLEMS/ISSUES WITH DISCOVER CARD OR IT'S AFFILIATES, PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP. ALSO, JUST REMEMBER THAT ALL CONVERSATIONS THAT YOU HAVE WITH CREDIT CARD COMPANIES ARE RECORDED.

Complaint_against: Chase Credit, Discover Card

Complaint: This is the second time this has happened. First with Discover Card, I paid of a credit card debt I had always paid on time. I called to close the account. They told me it was 'closed' on multiple occasions, but later I found a 'fee' had been posted against the 'closed' account. I had to pay the fee and fight to get this off my credit (which was otherwise spotless). Now the same thing just happend on a Chase Credit card. EXACTLY the same thing. I paid off the account and asked to close my account. They told me it was closed to shred my cards, but that it would remain visible online and could be continued to be billed against. So I still have a line of credit, which I don't want. In my mind the account is just not closed. What prevents them from tacking these fraudulent 'fees' the same as Discover Card? I WILL NEVER HAVE ANOTHER CREDIT CARD THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!!! Can't they see they are losing business with these scam like dealings with customers? And this goes f!
or good 'pay on time' customers with great credit, not just customers with money problems. They seem like they are there to scam us. WHEN WILL THE GOVERNMENT TAKE NOTICE OF FRAUD IN BIG CREDIT CARD BUSINESS????

Complaint_against: Discover Cards

Complaint:
Discover Card is the absolute WORST!!  I paid off a $6300 balance and they hit me with a $30 fee for finance charges -- on a paid off card.  Then when I called in May, they said they would waive the $30 fee "just this once."  So three weeks later, I start getting recorded messages instructing me to call a number.  I finally do and they tell me my account is in collections, now for $30, plus $15, plus finance charges.  This is on a card that has never ever had a late payment.

So I tell them that it was supposed to waived by Myra the wonder-idiot manning the phone back in May.  They argue with me, saying that Myra never entered any notes into my account and then Donna, Myra's idiot protege, starts giving me a lecture on finance charges, telling me that "next time" I do this, I'll know better.  I told her that there would be no next time and that I was cancelling my account...she reluctantly waived the fees, then abruptly transferred me to a Utah call center where I had to go through the whole thing again (this is now the fourth time) with some other idiot who finally agrees to cancel my account.  God bless his little heart.

I hate Discover; I will never use a credit card issued by them again; in fact, I will never use another credit card again.  These credit card companies are vile parasites.

Where is the goverment regulation on this?

Whom may I concern;
I like to mention about discover card's over charging APR.
Example last of the months my balance was $1,310 and after that I charged on 05/5-05/31/06 total of $3,319.71.And paid on 06/01/06 total of $2K, their finance charge was total of $99.04.And I called customer service and their comment was that their procedure,
is not 30days billing period .And they charged day by day which mean is even I paid every months and they still charge me daily APR and this never happen to me from another credit card company and for sure no one else experience this.
And I'm self employer and I use discover card for only SAM'S CLUB and my credit is good enough however, only this card charged me 17% and for sure only this card charge to everyone this APR .
Please consider this is serious issue and appreciated your attention and your prompt reply on this matter would be highly appreciated.

Complaint:
I cant help but notice on this webpage a whole list of discovercard members who are upset about something Discovercard charged them or did that really upset them. Has anyone came to the conclusion that if you aren't late on a payment in the first place you don't have to worry about late fees or your rates going up??? It isn't that difficult to atleast make a minimum payment on a credit card guys!!!!
I would also like too add in for all you people out there who think Discover Card is a slimy company that just wants your money, that at Discover Card I work in a department that simply calls cardmembers on the phone and asks them if we can help them by giving them a lower APR or even more cashback bonus. We offered this to thousands of cardmembers everyday and our most common responce is "I'm not interested" or "Stop calling me". Did anyone once think that we are trying to help and you are just not listening. Half the things I read in these complaints aren't realistic at all. Knowing the insides and outs of Discover Card I realize we can't make everyone happy... but we are actually trying. Discover Card is definately trying to reach the cardmembers and make it more beneficial to everyones needs! So stop your whining and complaining and realize that your people do a lot more than you think. You just don't take a second to even notice!!!!!!!!

Complaint_against: Discover Card/Account Guard

Complaint:
I had a DC for several years, made prompt payments on it, kept to a minimum balance, etc.  I had signed up for the account guard service as well.  I was TOLD that it would pay my minimum balance and protect my credit, etc.
I became disabled, and as a result, unemploye, in 2004.  After my state disability $ ran out, I called DC to start the account guard.  I was sent a form, had my doctor fill it out, and sent it in.  During that time, I got no statements from DC at all.  A few months later, DC called to say my account was overdue!  I said no, I had the account guard.  They said I couldn't re-start the account guard unless I brought my balance current by $150!!  (Note, during account guard use, you CAN'T use the card!)  I managed to pay the money, and called the account guard people.  They re-started the account guard, but then said all it would do was protect my credit and prevent fees, NOT pay the minimum due!
Account guard NEVER sent me any paperwork or documentation except to say they were stopping the guard, even though I was still both disabled and unemployed.  They apparently want the same proof over and over again to prove you are still disabled!  Well, I had been too ill to continually get a doctor's statement from the VA hospital, and then send it in to these jokers!
DC calls me EVERY SINGLE DAY, sometimes twice a day.  I have caller id, so I ignore it.  I have no money, so I can't even make a deal of any kind with them!
Yesterday I got a page from Discover, with a phone card attached, saying they would settle my account for 40%.  It's more than I have, isn't it always!
I can't find my original paperwork on account guard, and even if I had it, would it be usable to show that account guard and DC aren't holding up their end of our deal?!
Account guard has charged more to my account than I owed when I stopped using the card, I figure it's even.
Also, when I stopped using the card, I had a balance of $1400.  My balance apparently now is $3100 on a card I haven't used in over a year.  yikes.

Continuous phone calls.  I've asked repeatedly to have them send information by mail.  I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT deal with any credit card issues by phone.  They have ignored my wishes and continue to call, including 2 phone calls early on Sunday morning to my home phone.
I have since mailed a check to pay off my balance and closed my account.  I am still upset by the continuous calls, even though my account was in good standing.  I never found out why they were calling me.

Complaint:
In 2003 I was deployed to Iraq with my National Guard Unit. I contacted Discover Card and requested that my interested rates be lowered to 6%. This is a requirement of the Soldier's and Sailors Relief Act. Discover refused to lower my interest rates. While I was deployed my wife lost her job due to illness. I got behind on my payments.I should mention that I have 6 accounts with them. I contacted Discover Card to work out a possible solution. They supposedly placed all of my accounts in their hardship program and gave me lower payments for one year. This is automatically deducted from my checking account each month. I asked the representative to make sure that all of my accounts were in the program.
To shorten the story I started recieving collection letters from an attorney. I called the attorney and explained to him that I was supposed to be in their hardship program. Apparently Discover left 2 accounts out of the program. I have contacted Discover card and asked them to take the accounts out of collections and place them in the program with the other 4 accounts. They refuse to do so. I am now being sued by the attorney.
Is there anything I can do?

I cannot believe the complaints I have been reading!!! I am disgusted. Let me tell you the FACTS about Discover Card:

*EVERY credit card company charges overlimit fees & late fees. That should be expected. Please make your payments on time! We make adjustments and remove fees on a case by case basis, but if you have been delinquent 6 times in one year, and your mother has died 4 times, chances are we will not be able to help you. Perhaps you should not have a credit card. We have a neat way of documenting calls.
*If you request a 0% balance transfer, read the offer completely! Make sure you know the expiration date, if you are required to make purchases to keep it active, etc.... be INFORMED. Call if you have questions.
*Yes, payments are applied to Balance Transfers FIRST. So if you do a 0% BT and are required to make purchases to keep it active, you will have finance charges on the purchases!!! You CANNOT allocate your payments how you see fit.
*Discover does offer cardmembers several benefits-cashback bonus, complete fraud protection, etc....more than the other credit card companies. Yes I have researched.
*All calls are NOT recorded in our call centers!
*Yes, Discover could close your account based on periodic reviews of you credit rating with other credit card companies. This helps you stay out of debt.
*AND---My Biggest Complaint of all--If you are on vacation and do not make your payment because you didn't receive your statement, that is not Discover's fault!!! Do you skip your mortgage or utility payments when you're on vacation? Do you call the mortgage company and say...hm..I didn't receive my last statement because I was on vacation in the Bahamas. Darn, can you waive that fee for me? NO NO NO

Discover cardmembers are greedy and selfish.
Trust me when I say, Discover is not trying to steal your money. The managers and team leads in my department encourage the entire staff to provide excellent customer service, at all times.

Complaint: I alwasys pay the entire amount of every purchase made with my credit card.  I only use the card so that I will have a credit history.  I recently made a purchase of $6500 for home remodling expenses.  I sent in a bank money order to Discover card for $6500.  I called a few days after sending in the payment and the automated answering service told me that my payment had been recieved and applied to my account.  I was contacted 2 weeks latter by Discover card's finance department about aranging payment of intersts on the $6500 so that my credit would not be damaged!  I explained that I had paid the full amount.  The Discover card staff member became argumentative and insulting.  After twenty minutes of arguing she finally got me a supervisor and after looking up my account they told me that My paymnet had been rejected by the bank for "unknown reasons".  I went into the bank the next day to find out what was going on only to find that Discover Card had endorsed the!
money order incorrectly.  Discover card refuses to take responsibility for thier mistake and is still trying to charge me interest on the $6500 even though it was paid in good faith.  While trying to sort this out I have been hung up on multiple times by representatives of Discover card simply because I asked to speak to a supervisor.  I will never do business with Discover Card again and I suggest that anyone who values fair treatment and responsibility on the part of a lending agency to avoid this corporation at all costs!

Complaint_against: Discover Financial Services
My spouse has had a Discover Card since 1992 and I am a secondary on the account. During this time our relationship with Discover Financial Services has been without incident and we feel that other than their higher interest rates, we have been treated fairly.
However, in the later part of October 2006 I responded on-line to a mailed pre-approved invitation for a Platinum Discover Card with a credit limit up to $25,000 and a balance transfer up to the credit limit with a 3.9% interest rate until the year 2010. Before I completed the on-line application I changed my mind and canceled the process, and received notification that it had been canceled.
About two weeks later I received a Platinum Discover Card through the mail along with a letter advising that they had made a $5000.00 payment, which was the maximum, to my other card.
Originally, I had requested a balance transfer for a higher dollar amount, but changed my mind and canceled the application.
I went on-line and verified that they had indeed made a $5000.00 payment to my other card and immediately contacted  my card company and filed a dispute and then sent a letter to Discover Financial Services asking why they had done so after I had canceled the on-line application.
I received a reply from Discover Financial Services advising that "According to our records" yada yada yada, and that if I wanted a refund I should contact my other card company and request it from them.
I wrote back and advised Discover Financial Services that if they were expecting reimbursement for their $5000.00, they should contact the card company because number one, I had canceled the on-line application process and received confirmation that it had been canceled, and number two, I had not activated their card and did not agree to any of their terms or conditions.
During this time I made sure that any and all communications with Discover Financial Services were made in writing and made copies of the correspondences. Also during this time, Discover Financial Services attempted to contact me by telephone several times and finally left a message for me to call one of their 800 telephone numbers.
Finally, having the time and wanting to settle this issue, I contacted a representative with Discover Financial Services in Phoenix, AZ, who advised me that my account was 37 days past due, even though the due date on the first statement was 12/12/06.
I was also advised that the 3.90% interest rate had been increased to 10.99% and there was now a $39.00 late fee.
A payment was requested during this conversation and a threat was made that if one wasn't received now, the late payment would show up on my credit report.
I asked the representative if there were any notations on the account they had established for me and really wasn't surprised when
I was told no there wasn't.  This is why I have copies of both their and my correspondences.
I attempted to explain what had taken place and that I had been in communication with Discover Financial Services and that just as soon as my other card company had sent me a refund check for the $5000.00, I would send it to them. However, the representative
once again politely demanded that a payment be made now and requested my checking account number.
I politely advised this person that I was not going to divulge my bank account number and that they would get their money just as soon as I received it and that should be within the next 5 to 10 days.
The representative once again made reference to this having a negative impact on my credit rating, but when I advised that I would be filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, the tone of the conversation changed and I was told that all administrative and late fees would be waived upon receipt of the $5000.00.
This representative told me that information I had given had been entered on the account, to explain what was happening and the reason for the payment being late. When I receive the refund I will contact Discover Financial Services and see if the information had really been entered into the account or if I was just getting the run around.  If not, I'll be sure to get something in writing from them before I send them a penny or I'll see what is more important to them, getting their $5000.00 back or putting a negative comment on my credit report.

Complaint:
I opened an account with Discover several years back. I was prompt on my payments, and never had a late fee. Unfortunantly, and unbenounced to me, I ended up having some medical issues. I knew I was going to have some issues keeping up with bills, so I contacted Discover and was "enrolled" in a protection plan that allowed me to "skip" 2 months of payments without any late fees or negative effect on my account.
I was comfortable with our arrangement and the following month i recieved a bill stating I was "late" on my payment and they had assessed numerous penalties to my account. I contacted them and explained the situation regarding my enrollment in this "plan" they had offered me and was then informed that this "plan" doesn't exist!!!
Needless to say, I did indeed battle this, as THEIR customer support OFFERED this plan to me and CHARGED me for this plan! I had no choice in the end but to pay off the debt I accrued as a result of the "scam" (which is what I call it) and then terminated my account with them.
I would advise anyone that does dealings with these people via the phone to take names, and request confirmation numbers for anything that is completed over the phone. I would also document times and dates in case you later need to refer to them. I did not do these things and found myself between a rock and a hard place. These people are just as guilty of "scams" as any of the other lower quality credit card scams out there.

This is an update in reference to complaint #40.
I am pleased to announce that everything has been resolved to MY satisfaction and as I Discover(ed), all it took was communicating the RIGHT person.  I would suggest that if you have an issue with Discover Financial Services, if you haven't already done so, create your on-line account and communicate through their website.  It was my experience that when you communicate with one of their representatives over the telephone, no notes of the call are taken or comments made to your account and if you have to call back, and you will, you will speak to a different person and have to go over everything that you told the first person.  By utilizing their website, there is a record of who you communicate with and what was said, which creates a certain amount of accountability.  Good Luck!

Complaint:
Complaint Concerning Consumer Abuse by Discover Card

I have had the experience of being harassed by arrogant and abusive Discover Card personnel - particularly people from their so-called "Fraud Prevention" department, who regularly harass card holders via telephone using the phony guise of "unusual account activity" for the purpose of gathering additional private and highly confidential identification on cardholders.
The Discover Card people are clearly the nastiest most arrogant credit card people I have ever encountered -
and I have had dozens of creditors over many many years.  The Discover card people refuse to identify themselves and therefore are free to abuse consumers via telephone "at whim"  however they choose without fear of consumer recourse or accountability.
Beware it is not enough to pay the Discover Card  on time - or to stay within your credit limit - or to have a perfect credit or payment record !   If you have a Discover card, they will harass you "at whim"  leaving telephone messages suspending your credit card - all without valid reason or justification.  If you complain or ask the reason for the harassment or the kind of so-called "unusual activity" - you are are told its "confidential" until you have disclosed ALL of your private  identification information over the phone.  If you do permit them to intimidate you and comply with their abusive "interrogation", you will likely find out there really was no valid reason for the harassment except to gather more information about you.
If you complain and ask the name of the Discover Card employee, they will refuse to identify themselves.  They will also refuse to let you speak with a supervisor.   Again, if you do not comply with disclosing more personal information, they will simply cancel your card - at their whim and without justification.
I am currently experiencing this abuse for the second (and last time) This time, I have refused to tolerate their abuse - and my account has been canceled by them due to my failure to comply.  I have not had a lost or stolen Discover Card and I am not nor have I ever been past due on my Discover Card bill, and my current balance in under $200 - and way way below my credit limit.  But these abusive people have canceled my account unless and until I submit to their endless information gathering interrogation.
The fact that you respond to their intimidating and threatending telephone messages, which have left  at your home is not enough to satisfy them, even if you recite the last 4 digits of your social security number.  They will further insist upon you disclosing ALL of your personal private information to them over the telephone - to someone at a telephone number not listed on the Discover statement.
Discover card is absolutely abusive to consumers and needs to be investigated and reprimanded by the
federal government AND every state attorney general in the United States !
The best advice I could give anyone is stay away from Discover Card and their abusive practices and people.  This is a nasty and abusive credit card company !  (Even more abusive than AOL)
I will be posting this complaint about Discover Card wherever and however I can in hopes of somehow stimulating consumer boycotts and government investigation.

Complaint: I had major surgery in the summer of 2004, and tried to go back to work in the fall of 2004.  I lost my job, and had little money.  I thought that I had the Discover account guard coverage to pay on the account. I suffered complications from the surgery, and was not able to go back to work.  I was called all the time by people wanting the account to be taken care of.  I had no money, and lived on handouts.  I learned in October, 2006 that I had suffered a stroke after the surgery.  I am now being sued by the company becasue of non-payement of the bill.  I sent paper work to the insurance company, and now they will not pay because I am not under coverage.  I am in the state that had bad hurricannes, and I go day by day on my health.  I saw the list here, and I had already known that there must be other people who were like me.  The company charged over the limit charges, and late charges.

Complaint: I have a complaint against DiscoverCard. My current balance with them is just under $3900 but should be much lower would it not be for the excessive finance charges they issue every month even though I pay one-and-a-half times to twice the minimum balance required every month. I am currently on a debt consolidation program and, under that program, all finance charges should be waived, but Discover continues to levy them in excess of $45 a month. I make my payment and the balance goes through for the entire amount but when the next month's statement comes out, the finance charges are issued and take up almost half of my payment. According to their policy, Discover has to issue a finance charge if "there is still a balance on the account". I feel that this is very unfair and is just prolonging my payments and will keep me in this prison forever. I hope to get some help from you. It is very frustrating and costly for me.

Complaint: I received a promotional offer to open a Discover Account with 4.9% on balance transfers thru 9/2010 and zero % interest on all purchases until March 2007.  I transferred about $4000  and charged approx $3000 more before March 2007.  I made payments early each month, and each much paid more than the minimum amout due.  I made sure that prior to my March 2007 statement I paid more than I had charged in purchases, assuming that like most credit cards, that the payments would be applied to the lowest interest rate balances first, in this case, zero percent.  However, I then found out that my payments were made towards my balance transfer balance first, and not towards the zero percent purchases.  So after the statement closing in March, my purchase balance, which was at 0 %, jumped to 20 %, and my balance transfered amount was paid off.  I complained to Discover and was told there was nothing they could do about it.  I feel like Discover card used deceptive marketing!
 practices.

Complaint: I am so tired of dealing with Discover Card aka Legal Loan Sharks. It all went bad about 3 yrs ago. I had been a customer of DC for about 3 yrs, always paid on time. Well one time I went to The Local Sears and decided to pay my DC bill while I was there. I made a full payment or so I thought, until I got a phone call The rep said I was delinquent. It turned out that I paid 10 dollars short of "the new" min payment. I hadn't realized that they had raised the minimum payment again. Well that wasn't all they raised. They jacked me on the interest rate! Just because I was 10 dollars short from like 9% to 25%+! Why didn't they just break my legs? I would have recovered from that by now. Regardless I hung in there a couple more years until I hit some tough times, I was working in the Automotive industry and the industry went down the toilet. I started falling behind and I kept asking them to work with me and quit charging me interest and fees they wouldn't do it. Finall!
y after ignoring thier constant calls they set me up on a plan. The only problem was it was still more money per month than I could afford, but I decided to give it a shot. I ended up having to cancel it because they withdrew payment earlier from my checking account than they had originally stated, and it cost me 100 dollars in overdraft fees. Now more recently I tried to work with them one last time and they got me again! I set up what I was led to believe was a one-time withdrawal from my checking account, to get me current so I I could get on a plan. LIARS!!!! The following month I called to set up that plan and they said they couldn't do it. The first guy I talked to insulted me and hung up on me!! They said that they had already submitted a payment to my bank. I told them to stop it and they said they couldn't. So I called my bank and had it stopped. A few days later I checked my balance and I was in the negative. They just found another way around it and cost me 100 do!
llars in overdraft fees! How can they get away with this? What do I do now?! I'm not paying them another dime until they show me a plan in writing, and I may not pay it then. The moral of the story is avoid doing biz with Discover like its the Plague!!!!!

Complaint: I am so upset right now, I cannot see straight. I have been a happy Discover customer for 7 years, never been late, always paid more than was due and have had a steady 11.9% interest rate. I was forced to file bankruptsy 2 years ago due to very bad divorce, single mom with 3 kids. I did not put the Discover on that bankruptsy, have still always paid on time. 2 years later, I get this notice saying due to my filing of bankruptsy, my interest is being raised to 19.99%. Now, I have been working hard these last 2 years to improve my credit and have been successful in raising my credit score. Now these idoits come along and do this. I talked to Discover and demanded an explanation, the guy told me basically I was out of luck, the rate stands, and I could close the account if I didn't like it. I thought Congress was working on making these bums stop this stuff? All these poor people who aren't going to be able to afford their payments....good Lord, I am angry right now.

i had been promised a 4.99 percent interest rate for the life of the loan and we had it for about 6 months and all of a sudden we were receiving statments with a 28% interest rate, when i called they said no we never promised that and i know for a FACT that they did...i had done this huge balance transfer because of it...and now it has taken us 4 months at the 28% to finally get it paid off....that cost us hundreds of dollars...now multiply that by thousands and thousands of customers....i hate discover now and i want to close my account and never use them again!!!!please write me to tell me if this has happened to you!
maybe we can complain together and get them to pay us back for their lies.
sincerely, jeanne

I am so disappointed.  Afer reading all these complaints, I too having a GREAT credit score and holding a platinum account for four years, have been told that my APR is going from 9.9 to 19.9+ every month.  For what reason?  Because, I was told, "the economy is changing and interest rates may be rising."
Thank God I read what appeared to be junk mail from Bank of America.  This is the letter referred to as the "Amendment to your Credit Card Agreement."  It came two weeks before my next billing cycle and gave me short notice to write a letter of refusal to lock in at my current rate as well as agree to stop using my account and its categories A,B,C & D.
This can't be legal, is it?  I got on the phone and called all my friends and relatives to make them aware to watch for these letters.  This type of business could really harm someone like me with an excellent credit score who, also, 1) has NEVER been late with a payment; 2) always paid over my minimum; and, 3) never went over my credit limit.
Where IS a lawyer and the FTC when you need them?

Complaint:
I have always made payments that were well above what was asked.
I had a credit check done and found that it had been damaged by Discover card.
I had exceeded my approved limit which was set by Discover Card. I know its my fault but my point is this if a credit limit has been set then it can't be exceeded unless the credit limit has been raised if not then no additional purchases should have been approved.  But by them approving additional purchases they not only charge me a over the limit fee but raised my interest rates by 6% I know loan sharks that don't charge these rates.

I paid the amount due on my credit card, on the date due, at a Sear's retail store, which is an authorized payment center.  Within a few days past the due date, I received a very 'threatening' letter informing me that because the payment was late, they are lowering my credit limit, increasing the interest rate substantially and charging me a late fee.  I was, in essence, being penalized for their sloppy accounting system or do they purposely do this to cheat customers?  This was finally straightened out but I doubt whether I would want to continue using this card knowing they are so quick to add penalties.

I had a transcations with Office Depot where they did not refund the full amount for Lemon TV viewsonic  N3752W in exhanged.  I brought this to notice of Discover card and even provided all the receipt and informed them $ 76 office depot overcharged me.  Instead of Discover card supporting my claim send me a letter stating that my claim is closed and additional document provided is not valid.  Also the letter states that they will submit the report credit reporting bureau.
I am so surprised by their actions, instead of supporting their customer they have choosen to be with office who sold the lemon viewsonic TV to consumer and cheated them in pricing when it was excahnged.  I want to file a law suite against Discover card, for mis-treating me and threatning to spoil my credit. I have excellent credit history and have never had issue with any credit card payment. Any principle lawyer insterested in the above law suite please contact me. I have all the documentations to prove my claim. I am very methodical persons and know how to legally present my case with complete docu, mentations.

I HAD a Discover card...started with a low rate...the FINE PRINT said I HAD to use the card at least TWICE per month to keep it active and at that low rate. Nothing about the AMOUNT of the twice monthly charges was stated. SO, I used it twice monthly but never over $20-30 dollars and it was ALWAYS paid in FULL when the statement arrived. After 6 months of this, the rate was raised from 1.99% to 26.5%!So, I call to find out WHY..I was told that I was not using the card according to the restrictions of the offer, therefore I was a credit risk and my rate was raised. I paid the most recent bill, called and canceled the card. Then I got a bill stating I owed $500 because I canceled before the first year was up. Nothing in the contract about that. I printed it out in LARGE print, mailed it in along with the bill and asked that whomever opened the envelope to please highlight the section where it states that I would be charged $500 if I did not keep and use the card for at least one year. NO REPLY. The next month, I get a bill for $550, the $500 fee and late charges. So, I call..after speaking to THREE "supervisors", I finally get a man who claimed to be an area manager...he looked over my account and zeroed it out. I received one statement showing a zero balance and thanking me for my payment of $550 and a letter showing my account had been closed due to late payment..LOL...!idiots.

Complaint:
My brother in law was injured on July 14, 2007. He was hospitalized for 3 weeks then sent to a rehab hospital, then a nursing home, then back to hospital. He has a brain injury, is bedridden and unresponsive. His recovery is iffy, and he will not likely ever be independent again and certainly can't pay his bills now.
He had several credit cards, (see above) all of which have insurance coverage should he become disabled, injured, unemployed or otherwise unable to pay his bills. I contacted every one of the CC companies to explain what happened within days of his injury. They call daily, some several times a day. They will not stop. They say they will keep calling "in case he comes home", which I have adamantly stated will NOT happen.
I asked them to send me the forms to fill out for the account insurance, but he must sign them. Dumb huh? A Target rep said to hold his hand and have him sign the check! Uh, I think that's illegal, but she said she didn't think so. Discover asked if he called to let them know he was in the hospital. They can't or won't do a thing to work with me to resolve this problem!
So, having Accountcare or any other credit insurance is useless, should you ever become disabled to the point of unresponsiveness, because if you don't notify them, or call them, or send them a letter, you are screwed. He thought if anything happened to him, his debt would be covered. Wrong! It's a huge mess that will take a long time to resolve.

This is how the Discover Card Payment Protection Scam works. First, they will call you, asking you if it's okay to send you information in the mail regarding the payment protection plan. They will read off several paragraphs of information regarding the plan and ask you if you understood. They will tell you that you are not enrolling, and that they just want to send you information.
If you agree to let them send you the information, a week or so later you will receive a letter. The letter will state that you have purchased the Discover Payment Protection and are now an enrolled member. Apparently, merely agreeing to let them send you the information is enough to enroll you. When you call to complain, they will confirm that fact. Even if you had explicitly stated that you did not wish to enroll when you received that initial phone call, you will be.
Do not let your sense of politeness and common courtesy cause you to stay on the phone when they call. Like many over-the-phone scams, they depend on that for it to work. By all means, feel free to hang up on them.
Please warn any other Discover Card users you might know about this.

Complaint_against: Discover/Credigy/First Select

Complaint: My husband had a Discover card back in college that he tought he had paid off.  Apparently it was sold to First Select back in 2001.  Now 6 years later we get a call saying we owe $5,000!  My husband actually thought they had the wrong person because we were not aware of any debt.  We have purchased a house and it was not on our credit report.  Not one person has actually tried to contact us in that amount of time.  Within the first conversation they dropped it down to $2500, but only if we paid it within a few days.  Well, we did.....No one has given us any kind of "bill" or information that might show that we actually owe the debt.  None of this seems legitimate or legal.  All of the credit counceling agencies say that if they were willing to work with us to take it and run!  I still feel absolutely taken advantage of and now I read that in 7 years we would no longer owe the amount! This is a nasty business.  Consumer rights, yeah right.   Can anyone give me any!  advice on what to do at this point?

Complaint:
The discover credit card company allows you to set up you bank account on their online site for payment purposes, but the autopayment feature is NOT available (are you surprised?!) and the only way you can make online payment is through manual means.  After having set up my bank account on the Discover card web site, I forgot about payments assuming that it was going to be automatically debited from my bank account. Nooo.. the discover card company not only charged me late charges but they also reported it to the Credit Reporting agencies even though there was a ZERO balance payment. This was all for just about 32 days inadvertant late payment.  The Worst of all is the Discover card company refuses to report to the Credit reporting agencies about the full payment and zero balance information.  I tried to contact the customer services of the Discover card company all the way up to the top management. No use. Obviously they have a preferred customer and not-so-preferred customer mentality.  I will strongly urge anyone to investigate Discover cards horrendous customer service before signing up for a credit card.  I will never use a Discover card again even if they offer me unlimited credit or zero APR.  They must stop reporting to Credit reporting agencies for simple oversights. This is outrageous that they would want to correct their way of business.  Anybody have any suggestion regarding how to deal with such impudent Credit card companies?
